BEng Civil Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Warwick

Program Overview

This BEng in Civil Engineering at the University of Warwick builds your foundation in engineering through a broad first year of general engineering, before guiding you towards specialized training in civil engineering disciplines like analysis, design, sustainability, and safety. It’s ideal for creative problem solvers who want an engineering degree that balances technical know-how with real-world purpose—building the infrastructure that shapes our lives.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

You begin with a general engineering programme, giving you exposure to core engineering principles before specializing. Through modules like Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Business Management and Professional Skills, and Materials for Engineering, you’ll strengthen your grasp of quantitative methods, commercial awareness, and material behaviour—equipping you with the versatile foundation every engineer needs.

Year 2

In your second year, you'll deepen your civil engineering knowledge with practical and technical modules. For instance, Civil Engineering Design 1 helps you translate conceptual ideas into structural and geotechnical design thinking using sketching, surveying tools, and sustainability awareness. Other modules likely include structural analysis and materials design.

Year 3

The final year brings real engineering practice to the forefront. With modules such as Civil Engineering Design II, you’ll use software like SAP2000 and PLAXIS 2D to perform structural analysis and geotechnical modelling, mastering Eurocode-based design and numerical tools. Other modules like Structural Concrete Design, Structural Steel Design, and Managing Engineering Excellence further sharpen your technical design, materials judgment, and professional project execution.

Focus areas

"Build a solid foundation in general engineering before specializing in civil engineering design, structural analysis, geotechnics, concrete and steel structures, sustainability, industry-standard software tools, and project leadership."

Learning outcomes

"You’ll graduate with the ability to conceptually design civil infrastructure, apply structural and geotechnical analysis using recognised software, balance safety and sustainability, manage projects excellently, and communicate engineering solutions professionally."

Professional alignment (accreditation)

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, IHE, CIHT, and The PWI), giving you the academic grounding needed toward professional engineering status in the UK.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Warwick engineering graduates do well in the job market: 15 months after graduation, around 80% of engineering students are either working or in further study, with average earnings around £33,000. This shows how highly regarded the degree is among employers

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This program is designed from the ground up to turn theory into practice, ensuring you graduate with the hands-on skills that employers are looking for. You'll get to work in our state-of-the-art School of Engineering facilities, which include dedicated civil engineering labs and a structures courtyard, allowing you to test designs and understand material behavior in a real-world context. Your learning is powered by the same industry-standard software used by professional consultants, and you'll tackle ambitious group projects that simulate the challenges you'll face in your future career.

Here’s a closer look at how you’ll learn by doing:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll develop expertise in critical software packages central to modern design, including AutoCAD for 2D and 3D drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis of complex structures.

  • Group Design Projects: A key feature of each year is project-based learning. A major highlight is the multi-disciplinary group project, where you'll collaborate with students from other engineering streams to design, build, and test a solution to a complex brief, mirroring professional practice.

  • Specialist Laboratories: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our Structures Laboratory and Concrete Laboratory, where you can test materials and structural components to failure, providing invaluable insight into their real-world properties and behavior.

  • Field Trips: The curriculum includes site visits to major civil engineering projects and infrastructure, such as the National Soil Resources Institute at Cranfield University, to give you practical context for your geotechnical and materials studies.

  • Digital Fabrication: You can bring your designs to life using the advanced equipment at the School of Engineering's Digital Fabrication Suite, including 3D printers and laser cutters for creating precise models and prototypes.

  • Dedicated Resources: You will have access to the University of Warwick Library, which offers an extensive collection of engineering texts, journals, and online databases, alongside dedicated silent and group study spaces.

  • Research-Led Learning: Your practical work is informed by the cutting-edge research conducted within the School of Engineering's research groups, particularly in areas like Sustainable Materials and Infrastructure and Urban Resilience.
