BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bristol

Program Overview

BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering – University of Bristol
A three-year, full-time honours degree providing a broad but in-depth grounding in electronics, electrical systems, communications, control, computing and design, capped with a team-led industrial-flavoured project in Year 3. Ideal for students targeting roles in sustainable energy, power electronics and smart power systems, embedded firmware and robotics, telecommunications, electronics hardware and systems engineering, or going on to further study. You’ll benefit from collaborative teaching with award-winning researchers, access to over £20 million of dedicated electrical laboratories and workshops, plus scholarships including the UK Electronics Skills Foundation and E3 Academy awards.

Curriculum structure
Year 1
Shared with the MEng stream, this year covers foundational modules including Digital Circuits & Systems, Linear Circuits & Electronics, Fields & Devices, Engineering Mathematics I, and introductory programming (C or Python), along with hands-on experimental and systems engineering labs.

Year 2
Builds technical depth with Engineering Mathematics II, Signals & Systems, Digital Systems, Electronics 2, Communications, Energy Conversion, and a practical SMPS-based embedded systems project, all supported by team labs and tutorials.

Year 3 (final year for BEng)
You’ll undertake a 40-credit individual research or design project, supported by an optional programme of modules totalling 60 credits—examples include Power Electronics, Machines & Drive Technologies, Wideband Communications, VLSI Design, Optoelectronics, Networking Protocols, Digital Signal Processing and Mobile Communications.

Focus areas

  • Analogue, digital and mixed-signal circuit design (semiconductor devices, power electronics)
  • Real-time and embedded systems (microcontroller programming, firmware, SMPS design)
  • Networking, communications systems and signal processing
  • Electromechanical power systems, machines and smart energy generation/distribution
  • Electronics for instrumentation, controls, robotics and intelligent IoT devices
  • Integrated hardware-software system design and professional interdisciplinary engineering

Learning outcomes
Graduates gain the ability to design, simulate, prototype and test electrical and electronic systems using modern engineering tools; tackle complex signal, power and communication challenges; write embedded software; lead multi-disciplinary projects; and present technical solutions with professionalism, aligned to UK-SPEC requirements for technical competence.

Professional alignment (accreditation)
This BEng programme is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), under licence from the UK Engineering Council. It satisfies the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration and contributes toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (full CEng requires further learning such as progression to MEng or postgraduate study).
