Program Overview

Electronic and Electrical Engineering MEng/BEng at University of Leeds
A four‑year, full‑time honours degree that begins with a common two‑year curriculum shared across Leeds’ electronic, electrical and communications engineering programmes, allowing students to seamlessly move between BEng and MEng up to the end of year 2. The course includes an optional industrial placement or study‑abroad year, concluding with advanced specialist electives and a substantial individual project in year 4 (for MEng) or year 3 (for BEng only). Ideal for students targeting careers in embedded systems, power generation, renewable energy, wireless and RF systems, communications, robotics, semiconductor design, medical electronics, or consultancy across sectors like technology, energy and defence.

Curriculum structure:
Year 1:
Covers core modules including Circuit Analysis & Design, Physics of Electronic Devices, Introduction to Communication Systems, Digital Electronics & Microcontrollers, Introduction to Engineering Mathematics, Numerical & Algorithms, and an introductory group Electronic Design Project.

Year 2:
Builds on these foundations with Electronic Circuit Design, High‑Frequency & Power Electronics, Transistors & Optoelectronic Devices, Communications Theory, Control Systems, an Embedded Systems Project, and Microprocessors & Programmable Logic. There is also the option to take an industrial placement or study abroad between years 2 and 3, typically extending the degree to five years for the industrial variant.

Year 3 (final year for BEng):
Includes mandatory modules such as Professional Studies, Integrated Circuit Design, Electric Machines, Power Systems, Embedded Systems and a 50‑credit Group Design Project, plus one 10‑credit choice from RF & Microwave Engineering or Digital Communications.

Year 4 (MEng):
Features compulsory modules Modern Industry Practice and a 45‑credit Individual MEng Project alongside optional advanced technical electives—examples include Power Electronics & Drives; Renewable Generation & Emerging Energy Systems; Control Systems Design; Wireless Communications Systems; Data Communications & Network Security; FPGA/System‑on‑Chip Design; and Medical Electronics & E‑Health.

Focus areas:
The programme emphasises the integration of electronics, power, communications and control engineering with hands‑on design and development projects. You graduate prepared for system‑level engineering: from analogue/digital circuit design and semiconductor devices to embedded and real‑time software, networked communications, renewable energy integration, wireless/RF engineering and electronic system innovation.

Learning outcomes: Graduates gain strong analytical and design capabilities, substantial experience of laboratory and CAD tools, system integration through individual and group projects, awareness of emerging engineering challenges, and readiness to work in multi‑disciplinary teams across global high‑tech sectors.

Professional alignment (accreditation)
The BEng & MEng progrmas are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council and fully meets the educational requirement for CEng registration. The BEng is accredited for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially satisfies the academic content for CEng, with full CEng status achievable via further learning or progression to the MEng.

Reputation (employability & rankings)
Leeds’ School of Electronic & Electrical Engineering is ranked 1st in the UK for Electrical & Electronic Engineering by the Guardian University Guide 2025, among the top ten in both the Complete University Guide 2025 and The Times / Sunday Times 2025. The University is placed #82 by QS World University Rankings 2025. According to the 2020/21 Graduate Outcomes survey, 100% of Leeds EEE graduates responding were in graduate‑level roles or further study within 15 months. Leeds students are also among the top 5 most targeted by elite graduate employers, per The Graduate Market 2024 (High Fliers Research).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you choose Electronic & Electrical Engineering (BEng or MEng) at the University of Leeds, you dive into hands‑on learning from day one. You'll be based in the purpose‑built Electronic and Electrical Engineering Building, engaging in live labs, robotics suites, and embedded‑systems workshops alongside academic researchers. Throughout every year, you'll combine circuit design, ARM‑based firmware, simulation tools, and real hardware projects—just like professional engineers do

This program isn’t just lectures—it’s built around active experiential learning:

  • Team Engineering Project (45 credits, Year 3 Onwards): You join a team of 3–4 to identify a real-world problem from your summer placement, design a technical solution, prototype it in lab sessions, and deliver written and oral reports under academic supervision—practicing teamwork, project planning, budgeting and technical communication
  • Yearly Embedded Project Work: Every year includes lab-based challenges—from electronics basics in Year 1 to embedded design and power‑electronics systems in Years 2 and 3—supported by National Instruments DAQs, oscilloscopes, PCBs, and MATLAB/Simulink environments
  • NXP Electronics Project Laboratory (Years 3–4): State-of-the-art embedded‑systems lab equipped with ARM‑university boards, FPGA tools, robotics benches, laser optics setups, and renewable‑energy modules for personal or team honours project work
  • Robotics Innovation Lab & Mechatronics Equipment: Supervised teams in Years 3–4 develop systems using ABB industrial robots, Quanser QArm or Aero‑2 kits, and swarm‑robot control benches—ideal for control systems or aerospace design experience
  • Ultrasound and Sensor Instrumentation Laboratory: Use customised high‑bandwidth systems, prototyping ultrasound devices capable of multi‑DVD‑speed data transfer and signal processing work
  • Software Tools & Simulation Environments: In labs and assignments you regularly use MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, PSpice and circuit CAD, and high-performance computing clusters integrated with Leeds’ Virtual Learning Environment for remote access and coursework
  • Year in Industry & Summer Internships: After Year 2 (or Year 3 for MEng students) you can take a paid industrial placement with one of 100+ partner firms—from Jaguar Land Rover to Leonardo—recorded via the “industrial” degree variant. Meanwhile, shorter internships and on-campus opportunities are arranged through the EPS Employability Team
  • Leeds for Life / Employability Modules: From induction onwards, you’ll do CV-building workshops, case studies, and career sessions embedded in your studies—supported by timetabled workshops leading to IET accreditation and chartered eligibility (CEng or IEng)
  • Peer Mentoring & Engineering Society (ShockSoc): In first year you're paired with a Year 3 student mentor and can join ShockSoc to build robots, fight on the Robot Fighting League stage, or attend industry tech visits—giving you a practical community with peer learning all the way through
  • Study & Library Support Facilities: The programme gives you 24‑hour access to computing clusters, dedicated study spaces in the EEE foyer, and university-wide libraries—plus quiet zones and group rooms for lab report editing or tutorial prep
