BEng Hons Electrical and Electronic Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Surrey

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University of Surrey is a dynamic, hands-on degree that prepares students to design and build advanced systems in renewable energy, power engineering, and communications technologies. It’s ideal for those who want to graduate ready to solve real-world challenges and step confidently into engineering careers or Chartered status pathways.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
You’ll start with a common core, building a solid foundation through modules like Electrical Science I, Electronic Circuits, and Computer and Digital Logic. These are supported by interactive lectures, labs, and tutorials designed to hone your problem-solving and fundamentals in electricity and computing systems.

Year 2:
The focus shifts to specialist areas—think power electronics, communication systems, and renewable energy generation and control. You’ll learn through a mix of high-quality lectures, fabrication labs, and design-based activities that bring theory into real-life application.

Placement Year (Professional Training):
A standout feature is Surrey’s industry-embedded Professional Training placement year, which is compulsory. Typically undertaken between Years 2 and 3, you’ll work full-time in well-known companies such as BAE Systems, Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, and BBC, gaining valuable practical experience and building a professional network—many students even receive job offers or financial sponsorship as a result. These placements also count toward the training component needed for Chartered Engineer status

Year 3 (Final Year):
This year challenges you to integrate your knowledge and tackle advanced problems in electrical machines, power engineering, and control systems. Alongside advanced labs and conservation-level learning, you’ll also have the chance to complete a capstone project, developing independence and specialist expertise.

Focus areas:
A rich mix of electrical and electronic systems design, power and control engineering, communication networks, renewable energy, and applied technologies—backed by the expertise of Surrey’s world-class research centres like 5G/6G Innovation Centre and Surrey Space Centre.

Learning outcomes:
You’ll graduate with robust analytical skills and practical experience in designing, testing, and implementing electronic and electrical systems; you’ll solve complex engineering challenges with both technical finesse and creative insight.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
This BEng (Hons) is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council—meeting the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially fulfilling those for Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Reputation (employability & rankings):

  • Ranked 11th in the UK for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2024.

  • Impressive graduate outcomes: 95% are employed or in further study within 15 months, with an average starting salary around £36,000.

  • Surrey is also a top-20 UK university overall—from rankings like Times, The Guardian, and Complete University Guide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From the first year, you'll be immersed in a learning environment shaped by leading-edge research centres, practical labs, and a strong pathway to professional placements.

Your experiential learning journey:

  • Learn at the forefront of engineering research: Your teaching is grounded in world-leading smart technologies, including the 5G/6G Innovation Centre, Advanced Technology Institute, Centre for Vision, Speech & Signal Processing, and Surrey Space Centre. These research hubs infuse modules with genuine, cutting-edge projects.

  • Professional Training Placements: The program offers an award-winning Professional Training placement scheme—most students take a paid year-long placement (often between Year 2 and Year 3), gaining real-world experience at companies like Airbus, Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, GE Healthcare, HP, and more.

  • Real-world design projects in labs: The Engineering Professional Studies module equips you with professional design and teamwork experience—from problem scoping to build-test cycles—ethics, SDGs, sustainability, and client-focused presentation all included.

  • Engineering design plus sustainability skills: You’ll gain hands-on familiarity with laboratory and workshop tools, learn risk management, and design sustainable electronic systems—preparing you for professional engineering challenges.

  • Institutional recognition and support: Professional accreditation by the IET paves your path toward chartership, and Surrey's school boasts high employability: 94–95% of graduates are in work or further study soon after leaving.
