These foundational courses focus on essential electronic principles, digital logic via Python, and the mathematical tools that support your future studies.

Year 2:
Building on your base, you’ll dive into Circuits, Control & Communications, Engineering Mathematics III, and Computer Algorithms and Architecture, exploring microprocessors and programming in C. You'll also take Electrical Science II and continue professional development through the Laboratories, Design & Professional Studies modules, where hands-on design and team projects bring theory to life.

Placement Year (Professional Training Year):
Available as a route, this full-year placement integrates hands-on experience with structured support. Through the Professional Training Year module, you'll reflect on your work, track your development, and transfer those insights into your final academic year—making you more confident and employment-ready.

Year 3 (Final Year):
Your final year centers around professional development via the Engineering Professional Studies module and a major Year 3 Project—an independent, research-driven endeavour. Alongside, you can specialize through optional modules like Digital Communications, Fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing, RF & Microwave Fundamentals, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Computer Vision & Pattern Recognition, Control Engineering, and Robotics.

Focus areas:
You'll engage with electronics across a broad spectrum—AI, wireless communication, multimedia engineering, nanotechnology, signal processing, and space systems—drawing on strengths from Surrey’s world-leading labs like the 5G/6G Innovation Centre and Surrey Space Centre.

Learning outcomes:
Graduates finish with the ability to apply electronics theory to real-world challenges, tackle advanced system design, and communicate effectively in professional environments—bringing technical confidence and creative problem-solving to their careers.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
The BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering is fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) — qualifying you academically for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) registration and partially meeting requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability & rankings):

  • Ranked 11th in the UK for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2024.

  • Impressive graduate outcomes: 95% are employed or in further study within 15 months, with an average starting salary around £36,000.

  • Surrey is also a top-20 UK university overall—from rankings like Times, The Guardian, and Complete University Guide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From the first year, you'll be immersed in a learning environment shaped by leading-edge research centres, practical labs, and a strong pathway to professional placements.

Your experiential learning journey:

  • Learn at the forefront of engineering research: Your teaching is grounded in world-leading smart technologies, including the 5G/6G Innovation CentreAdvanced Technology InstituteCentre for Vision, Speech & Signal Processing, and Surrey Space Centre. These research hubs infuse modules with genuine, cutting-edge projects.

  • Professional Training Placements: The program offers an award-winning Professional Training placement scheme—most students take a paid year-long placement (often between Year 2 and Year 3), gaining real-world experience at companies like Airbus, Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, GE Healthcare, HP, and more.

  • Real-world design projects in labs: The Engineering Professional Studies module equips you with professional design and teamwork experience—from problem scoping to build-test cycles—ethics, SDGs, sustainability, and client-focused presentation all included.

  • Engineering design plus sustainability skills: You’ll gain hands-on familiarity with laboratory and workshop tools, learn risk management, and design sustainable electronic systems—preparing you for professional engineering challenges.

  • Institutional recognition and support: Professional accreditation by the IET paves your path toward chartership, and Surrey's school boasts high employability: 94–95% of graduates are in work or further study soon after leaving.
