Civil and Environmental Engineering (Industrial) BEng

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

The University of Leeds offers a Civil and Environmental Engineering (Industrial) BEng, a four-year program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in civil engineering principles, environmental systems, and industrial applications. This program equips students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional understanding needed to succeed in the engineering sector and related industries.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1:
Students build a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, and core engineering principles, alongside introductory courses in civil engineering. Key topics include mechanics, materials science, environmental science, and computing for engineers, laying the groundwork for more specialized study in later years.

Year 2:
The focus shifts to more applied civil and environmental engineering topics, including structural analysis, fluid mechanics, geotechnics, and environmental systems. Students also gain practical laboratory experience and develop skills in project management, teamwork, and technical communication.

Year 3:
This year emphasizes industrial experience, with a placement or industrial training integrated into the program. Students apply their knowledge in real-world engineering environments, gaining insight into professional practice and developing key employability skills.

Year 4:
The final year focuses on advanced technical modules and a capstone engineering project, where students tackle complex engineering challenges, often addressing sustainability, infrastructure development, or environmental impact. This project integrates theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and independent research.

Accreditation:
The program is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), meeting the UK standard for professional engineering education and providing eligibility for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status upon graduation.

Campus Location:
The University of Leeds is located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK, with state-of-the-art engineering laboratories, environmental testing facilities, and industry-standard design studios, giving students access to the resources they need to thrive academically and professionally.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Leeds emphasizes practical experience and industry engagement:

  • Industrial Placement Year: Students spend a full year in an engineering or environmental role, applying classroom knowledge to real-world projects.

  • Laboratory and Fieldwork: The program includes extensive hands-on sessions in materials testing, environmental monitoring, and structural analysis, ensuring practical competency.

  • Student Societies and Competitions: Students can participate in the Civil and Structural Engineering Society, national design competitions, and collaborative projects to foster teamwork and innovation.

  • International Opportunities: Leeds offers study abroad options and international projects, allowing students to gain a global perspective on civil and environmental engineering challenges.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The Careers Centre at Leeds provides comprehensive support for students:

  • Career guidance and planning, tailored to engineering disciplines.

  • Workshops for CVs, cover letters, and interview preparation.

  • Networking events and on-campus recruiting, connecting students with leading engineering employers.

Employability:
Graduates are highly sought after in sectors including construction, infrastructure, environmental consultancy, and sustainability. Alumni have pursued careers at Arup, Balfour Beatty, Mott MacDonald, and other international engineering firms, as well as roles in research and government agencies.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the BEng, students can continue their studies with a MEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering, MSc in Environmental Engineering, or specialized postgraduate programs in sustainability, water resources, or structural engineering.
