Engineering BEng Hons

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lancaster University

Program Overview

Year 1: Building a Strong Foundation

Your first year introduces you to the core principles of engineering, providing a solid foundation for your studies. You'll engage in modules such as Engineering Design, Materials Science, Mathematics for Engineers, and Physics for Engineers, alongside practical laboratory sessions and group projects. This year emphasizes developing problem-solving skills and understanding the engineering design process.

Year 2: Specialisation and Advanced Topics

In the second year, you begin to specialise in your chosen engineering discipline, such as Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Mechatronic, or Nuclear Engineering. Modules typically include Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Control Systems, and Advanced Materials, combined with hands-on projects that challenge you to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. This year deepens your understanding and prepares you for more complex engineering challenges.

Year 3: Independent Project and Professional Development

Your final year focuses on consolidating your learning and preparing for your career. You will undertake a substantial Individual Project, allowing you to apply your knowledge to a real-world engineering problem. Modules may include Project Management, Sustainable Engineering, and Advanced Topics in Engineering, with a strong emphasis on professional skills such as teamwork, communication, and ethical considerations. This year ensures you are ready to embark on your engineering career or pursue further study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Lancaster University, the Engineering BEng (Hons) H100 is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles, even if you don't have a traditional scientific or mathematical background. The foundation year focuses on developing your skills in mathematics, physics, and laboratory work, ensuring you're well-prepared for the challenges of the full degree. As you progress, you'll engage in hands-on projects, collaborate with peers, and apply your learning in real-world contexts.

Here's how the program integrates experiential learning:

  • Foundation Year Modules: Begin with core modules such as Introduction to Engineering and Further Foundation Mathematics, laying the groundwork for your engineering studies.

  • Hands-on Laboratory Work: Engage in practical laboratory sessions where you can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world experiments, enhancing your understanding of engineering concepts.

  • Project-Based Learning: Participate in individual and group projects led by academics, allowing you to tackle engineering challenges and develop problem-solving skills.

  • Interdisciplinary Approach: Study modules from various engineering disciplines, providing a broad perspective and preparing you for specialization in later years.

  • Industry-Led Final-Year Project: In the latter stages of your degree, undertake an industry-led project, applying your learning to solve real-world engineering problems
