4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Bournemouth University

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering at Bournemouth University is a four-year programme designed to shape well-rounded, industry-ready engineers. Whether you’re drawn to aerospace, automotive, marine, energy, or high-tech sectors, this course provides the knowledge, practical experience, and professional insight to help you thrive.

Curriculum Overview:

The programme blends theoretical depth with practical application, ensuring students develop both technical expertise and the ability to innovate.

  • Engineering Design with Practice:
Learn how to identify real-world design constraints and apply engineering analysis to develop practical solutions.

  • Engineering Principles A & B:
Build a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles while learning to apply them to design mechanical systems and components.

  • Materials with Practice:
Gain a critical understanding of materials selection and production methods—essential for modern design and manufacturing challenges.

  • Capstone Design Project:
In the final year, students collaborate in teams on a major project, bringing together everything they’ve learned to design, test, and present a complete engineering solution.

Industry Placement:

One of the standout features of the course is a minimum 30-week work placement. This gives students the opportunity to:

  • Gain valuable real-world experience

  • Build professional networks

  • Strengthen their CV

  • Improve their chances of securing a graduate role before finishing the course

Placements often take place with reputable engineering firms, offering direct exposure to the demands of the workplace.

Accreditation:

For the 2025 intake, the programme is seeking professional accreditation from:

  • The Institution of Engineering Designers (IED)

  • The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE)

This will align the course with the academic standards required for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration—offering graduates a clear path to professional recognition in the UK and internationally.

Campus & Facilities:

The course is delivered at Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University’s main campus, located in a well-connected area on the Poole-Bournemouth border.

Students benefit from:

  • Purpose-built engineering labs

  • Modern learning spaces

  • A collaborative and forward-thinking academic environment

Talbot Campus is also home to BU’s growing community of engineering and design professionals—making it an ideal place to learn, experiment, and innovate.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Real-World Learning from Day One

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering – Bournemouth University

At Bournemouth University, the Mechanical Engineering programme isn’t just about learning how things work—it’s about learning how to make things work better. From day one, students are encouraged to get hands-on and apply what they’ve learned in meaningful, real-world situations.

Industry Placement – A Launchpad for Your Career

One of the programme’s most valuable features is the 30-week industry placement during the Sandwich Year. This gives students the chance to:

  • Gain real-world engineering experience

  • Work with respected firms in sectors like automotive, aerospace, energy, and manufacturing

  • Apply theoretical knowledge to live engineering projects

  • Build a professional network and boost employability—often leading to graduate job offers

These placements offer an unmatched opportunity to see what it’s really like to be an engineer in action.

Live Projects and Industry Collaboration

Throughout the course, students take on design challenges and group projects shaped by real industry needs. Whether it’s refining a product design or solving a technical problem, students work with input from engineering professionals to deliver real-world solutions—building both technical confidence and commercial awareness.

Competitions and Clubs That Inspire Innovation

Beyond the classroom, students can dive into engineering competitions, team challenges, and project-based societies. These opportunities are all about:

  • Fostering creativity and innovation

  • Developing teamwork and leadership

  • Strengthening both technical and soft skills

Participation in these extracurriculars not only makes for a more exciting university experience—it also strengthens your CV.

Think Global, Act Local
