MEng Hons Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Loughborough University

Program Overview

The MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering course at Loughborough University is a dynamic and future-focused program designed to develop versatile engineers equipped to solve real-world challenges. Over four years, students receive an in-depth education that blends scientific theory with cutting-edge engineering practice. The curriculum is crafted to build strong foundations in mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science, and control systems, while offering opportunities to explore emerging technologies and sustainable solutions. The MEng is a direct route to achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, and is particularly suited for those aiming for leadership or advanced technical roles.

Curriculum Structure
This extended master’s-level degree provides a comprehensive pathway through increasingly advanced study. The structure includes:

  • Year 1 and 2: Core modules in engineering mathematics, mechanical principles, electronics, design and computing. These years ensure a solid grounding in the fundamentals of mechanical engineering.

  • Year 3: Advanced topics such as aerodynamics, dynamics and vibrations, computational fluid dynamics, and engineering management, coupled with a significant group design project.

  • Year 4: A focus on specialist electives, including robotics, additive manufacturing, and renewable energy systems, alongside a major individual research project. This final year allows students to deepen expertise in areas aligned with their career goals.

  • Students benefit from strong industry alignment throughout, with modules co-designed by professionals and frequent guest lectures from engineering leaders.

Accreditation
The course is fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which means it satisfies the academic requirements for CEng registration and ensures that the education you receive meets the highest standards of the profession.

Campus Location
The program is delivered on Loughborough University’s main campus in Leicestershire, consistently ranked among the best in the UK for engineering, student experience, and employability. Facilities include state-of-the-art labs, 3D printing suites, wind tunnels, and design studios—all housed within a vibrant and collaborative engineering school.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Loughborough, learning by doing is a core part of the experience. The MEng program offers numerous ways to engage with real engineering challenges:

  • Year in Industry (optional but encouraged): Students can take a placement year between Years 2 and 3, gaining hands-on experience with top employers like Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, or Siemens, often returning with graduate job offers in hand.

  • Project-Based Learning: Every year includes design and development challenges, simulating professional team-based environments.

  • Student Engineering Teams: From Loughborough Formula Student to Drone Racing and Robotics Clubs, there are countless opportunities to apply engineering skills in competitive and collaborative ways.

  • Research Opportunities: Particularly in the final year, students work on cutting-edge research under academic supervision, contributing to areas such as sustainability, digital manufacturing, and bioengineering.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Loughborough’s Careers Network is well known for its tailored approach to engineering students. Support services include:

  • One-to-one career coaching and planning.

  • Workshops on crafting impactful CVs, cover letters, and navigating technical interviews.

  • Regular career fairs and employer presentations, with strong ties to top UK and global engineering firms.

Employability
Graduates of this MEng program are highly competitive in the job market, with many going on to work for industry leaders such as Jaguar Land Rover, Dyson, Airbus, Shell, and Arup. The program’s strong technical base and professional focus also enable graduates to excel in fields like consulting, R&D, automation, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Further Academic Progression
Although the MEng is already a master’s-level qualification, students interested in pushing further can pursue PhDs or specialised MSc programs in areas such as aerospace, robotics, materials science, or engineering management. Others may pivot to interdisciplinary fields like AI in engineering, environmental technology, or even pursue an MBA to transition into business and leadership roles.
