BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Design

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Oxford Brookes University

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering Design at Oxford Brookes University blends mechanical engineering fundamentals with a strong focus on design, innovation, and creativity.

Year 1: Students are introduced to the foundations of mechanical design, mathematics, CAD (Computer-Aided Design), engineering mechanics, and materials science.
Year 2: The curriculum covers thermofluids, dynamics, stress analysis, electronics, and design for manufacturing, along with teamwork-based design projects.
Year 3 (Industry Placement): Students take part in a year-long industrial placement, gaining valuable real-world experience in professional engineering settings.
Year 4: In the final year, students engage in advanced modules such as sustainable engineering design, control systems, and a major individual design project.

Throughout the course, students use professional tools such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software, gaining practical and analytical skills.
The program is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), meeting partial requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

• Lab Access & Equipment: Access to modern design and prototyping labs, including 3D printers, CNC machines, and wind tunnels.
Practical Modules & Capstone Projects: Includes real-world design challenges and industry-sponsored group projects.
Internship/Placement Year: Industry placement opportunities with top engineering and design firms across the UK and beyond.
Student Societies/Competitions: Participate in Formula Student, Design Challenge competitions, and engineering societies for hands-on learning and networking.
Unique Selling Point (USP): Strong emphasis on design-led mechanical engineering supported by industry experience, ideal for careers requiring creativity and problem-solving.
