BEng Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Edinburgh

Program Overview

A mechanical engineer has contributed to almost every equipment or process that exists today.

Mechanical engineers analyze, design, and manufacture a wide range of industrial products and systems. This covers almost anything with moving parts, such as washing machines, wind turbines, automobiles, and airplanes.

As a mechanical engineer, you will utilize your creative and imaginative skills to create and enhance goods and processes, in addition to vital

Physics, sophisticated mathematics, and cutting-edge engineering software.
Studying mechanical engineering opens opportunities to increasingly diverse disciplines, including:

Bioengineering and Medical Engineering
nanotechnology
Sports engineering
Renewable energy

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Design & Research Projects

  • Year 4 Individual Project: In their last year, students work on a significant individual project, which is typically related to their supervisors' research activity. This exposes students to cutting-edge research and allows them to contribute to the University's research output. The University of Edinburgh

Laboratory and Practical Work

  • Throughout the program, students participate in laboratory sessions and group projects to gain hands-on experience in topics such as dynamics, thermodynamics, and materials science. The University of Edinburgh

Engineering MakerSpace

  • Students have access to the Engineering Makerspace, a specialized workspace outfitted with tools and materials for designing, building, and testing their own projects and innovations. The University of Edinburgh

Internships & Industry Engagement

  • The School of Engineering offers a number of internships each year, allowing students to work on research or teaching-related projects over the summer. These internships are competitive and open to undergraduate students who are not finalists beginning in their second year. The University of Edinburgh

Study Abroad Opportunities

  • In the third year, students can study abroad at partner schools in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Asia, broadening their global perspective and academic experience.

Student Societies and Competitions

  • Students can take part in award-winning societies including Formula Student (developing and racing fast cars), Endeavour (rocketry), and HYPED (hyperloop technology).

Progression & Future Opportunities

Further Study

  • Many graduates choose to further their studies by graduating to a taught MSc or a research-based PhD, often concentrating in topics such as:
  • Robotics and autonomous systems
  • Renewable energy
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Material Science
  • Engineering Management
  • Edinburgh's renown and significant research output make it an excellent stepping stone into academics or advanced research positions.

Professional registration.

  • The BEng is a step toward becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng), but more approved study (e.g., MSc or MEng) is usually required.
  • The degree is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which promotes professional growth.
