MEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Hertfordshire

Program Overview

If you're passionate about how things work—and how to make them work better—the Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Hertfordshire offers the perfect launchpad for your future in engineering. This three-year, full-time programme blends core theory with hands-on experience, ensuring you graduate with both the knowledge and confidence to make an impact in industries ranging from aerospace and automotive to energy and robotics.

What You'll Learn

The programme is structured to give you a broad, well-rounded foundation in mechanical engineering, with key modules including:

  • Engineering Mathematics – Sharpen your problem-solving and analytical abilities

  • Statics & Dynamics – Learn how structures behave and how forces act on systems

  • Thermodynamics & Fluid Mechanics – Understand energy transformation and fluid behaviour

  • Materials & Manufacturing Technology – Explore materials science and how products are made

  • Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) – Use the same tools as professional engineers to design and analyse

  • Sustainable Design – Tackle engineering challenges with sustainability in mind

Each year builds on the last, expanding your expertise and guiding you toward real-world application.

Hands-On Learning That Counts

From your very first year, you’ll be encouraged to design, build, and test. One of the standout opportunities is contributing to the university’s Formula Student racing car team, where you’ll work on a real, competitive vehicle—applying your classroom knowledge to solve practical engineering problems as part of a team.

Accreditation That Opens Doors

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), meeting rigorous industry standards and partially satisfying the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Note: This accreditation applies to students entering between 2023 and 2025.

Learn in an Industry-Led Environment

Your studies will take place at the College Lane Campus in Hatfield—home to cutting-edge engineering labs, workshops, and collaborative spaces that reflect the tools and environments of modern industry. It’s a space where innovation, creativity, and community thrive.

Graduate Ready for Anything

With a strong foundation in both theory and practical application, you’ll be ready to take on roles in:

  • Automotive & Aerospace Engineering

  • Manufacturing & Design

  • Energy, Utilities & Renewables

  • Biomedical Technology & Robotics

  • Engineering Consultancy & Project Management

You’ll also have the option to pursue further study with a wide range of postgraduate degrees, including MScs in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Automotive, and more.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Hertfordshire, Mechanical Engineering isn’t just about equations and theory—it’s about applying what you learn to real-world challenges. The MEng programme is packed with hands-on experiences that prepare you for industry from the inside out, helping you build the practical skills and confidence that employers value most.
