MEng Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

Learn how to create smarter machines, from autonomous robots to self-driving cars. Using advanced mechanical, electrical and control engineering, you'll explore a range of innovative products and systems. The combined skills you'll learn will be highly sought-after within the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

Mechatronics is the combination of mechanics, electrical and control systems. We find it in devices such as:

  • autonomous robots
  • self-driving cars
  • complex construction equipment

This 4-year integrated master's degree provides the core topics you'll need to master mechanical engineering. It then gives you the advanced skills to be able integrate electrical systems and mechanical devices.

As part of this course you can:

  • gain an in-depth understanding of sensors, instrumentation and signal processing for structural design
  • take a work placement to boost your academic performance and prepare for your career
  • explore the growing area of automation and robotics
  • use our design workshops and placement
  • showcase your work in our annual engineering design show
  • go on site visits to experience engineering in practice

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The MEng Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics program at the University of Southampton offers a comprehensive suite of experiential learning opportunities designed to enhance practical skills and industry readiness.

Design and Build Projects: Throughout the course, students engage in hands-on projects that involve designing, building, and testing components and systems. These projects foster creativity and practical problem-solving skills.

Individual Research Projects: In the third year, students undertake individual research projects, allowing them to delve into specific areas of interest and apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.

Group Design Projects: In the fourth year, students participate in a master's-level group design project, applying their engineering knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Industrial Placements: Students have the option to undertake an industrial placement year, typically between the second and third years or between the third and fourth years. This placement provides practical experience in an engineering firm, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a professional context.

Specialist Facilities: The program provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, including design workshops and studios, where students can bring their engineering concepts to life with expert support.

These experiential learning components are integral to the program, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for careers in mechanical engineering and mechatronics.
