Leeds Beckett’s BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying is a three-year full-time degree (with a placement/ sandwich year route available) that is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), meaning it meets industry standards.
It’s ideal if you’re interested in the financial, legal, technical, and management sides of the construction and built environment sector—especially cost control, contracts, and working closely with clients and contractors.
Curriculum Structure
Here is what you’ll study in each year, with sample modules and the focus of learning:
Year 1
In the first year you’ll build foundational knowledge about how construction projects work, both technically and legally. Modules include Law in the Built Environment, Introduction to Construction Measurement & Estimating, Introduction to Construction Technology, Built Environment Economics, Principles of Measurement, and Procurement, Tendering & Valuation. You’ll begin developing measurement skills, cost estimating, construction technology basics, and economic understanding so you can see how decisions affect overall project costs.
Year 2
In Year 2 you move into more applied and complex subjects. Expect modules like Construction Technology, Construction Communications & Application, Construction Project Management, Measurement, Contract Practice, plus Interdisciplinary Practice. These modules help you develop skills in managing projects, communicating professionally, applying technology, dealing with contracts, and practising measurement in realistic settings.
Year 3
The final year integrates everything. You’ll study Contemporary Issues in the Built Environment, Commercial Construction Management, Issues in Construction Law, Dissertation, and Inter-Professional Consultancy (for full-time students). You’ll use this year to tackle a major independent project (dissertation), explore cutting-edge challenges in the industry (such as sustainability, new tech, legal/contractual complexities), and prepare for entering the profession.
There’s also a placement / sandwich year option (one full year in industry) for gaining hands-on experience.
