BA (Hons) Joint Honours Politics and Philosophy

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Manchester Metropolitan University

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by big ideas and want to understand how they shape the world we live in, this degree brings politics and philosophy together in a way that feels both relevant and inspiring. It’s perfect for students who enjoy debating real-world issues, questioning how societies work, and developing the critical thinking skills needed for impactful careers.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year gives you a strong foundation in both subjects. You’ll explore political systems and key thinkers through modules like Modern Political Thought and Introduction to Philosophy, learning how ideas have influenced institutions and everyday life. Along the way, you’ll build essential skills in critical reading, writing, and debate — the tools you’ll use throughout the degree.

Year 2

In your second year, you start diving deeper into the themes that matter to you. Modules such as Ethics & Global Justice and Comparative Politics & Institutions help you connect philosophical arguments to real global issues like human rights, climate change, and inequality. You’ll also develop stronger research skills, preparing you for more advanced study in your final year.

Year 3 (Final Year)

Your final year allows you to bring everything together and specialise. You might take modules like Global Politics & Philosophy and complete an Independent Research Project, where you choose a topic you’re passionate about and explore it in depth. By the time you graduate, you’ll have a strong academic portfolio and the confidence to step into your career or further study.

Professional alignment (accreditation):

The course isn’t tied to a specific accrediting body, but it’s designed to build highly transferable skills — analytical thinking, ethical reasoning, argumentation, and research — that employers across public service, NGOs, education, media, and policy-making consistently look for.

Official data shows that around 88% of graduates progress into work or further study within 15 months, reflecting MMU’s strong support and career development pathways.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the things students love most about studying Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Met is how active and engaging the learning experience feels. You won’t just memorise theories — you’ll debate ideas, analyse real political issues, practice research skills, and work closely with lecturers who bring current global and ethical debates straight into the classroom. MMU’s campus is built for modern learning, with excellent digital tools, comfortable study spaces, and strong library support that helps you grow as an independent thinker.

Whether you’re discussing global justice in a seminar, working on a group presentation, or using MMU’s digital resources for your research project, each year of the course builds your confidence and practical skills step by step.

Here’s what your hands-on learning experience will include:

  • Placement or Study Abroad Year (optional but highly encouraged):
In your third year, you can choose to work in a professional organisation or spend a full year abroad. This gives you real exposure to political, cultural, and ethical issues outside the classroom, helping you build networks and gain real experience before graduation.

  • Research-led teaching and academic support:
Your lecturers are active researchers, so your classes often include current debates, contemporary case studies, and fresh insights from political philosophy, global policy, and ethics. This keeps your learning relevant and intellectually exciting.

  • Seminars, discussions, and group projects:
Much of the course happens in smaller, interactive sessions where you debate ideas, present arguments, and collaborate with classmates. These discussions help you develop confidence in speaking, reasoning, and forming persuasive viewpoints.

  • Independent Research Project:
In your final year, you’ll take on a major project where you choose a topic you’re passionate about, carry out research, and receive one-on-one guidance from expert staff. This is a chance to develop specialist knowledge and showcase your academic strengths.

  • Access to modern digital tools and extensive library resources:
Students consistently report high satisfaction with MMU’s IT support, online databases, e-resources, and study facilities. Whether you’re analysing government documents, exploring philosophical texts, or preparing a presentation, the digital infrastructure is there to support you.

  • A campus environment built for learning:
With a modern library, dedicated study spaces, and access to the wider arts, humanities, and social sciences resources, you’ll always have the space and tools you need to work, research, and collaborate.

  • Support services that follow you throughout your degree:
From academic writing workshops to digital literacy help, the university provides multiple layers of support to help you settle in, stay confident, and grow into your strengths.
