History BA (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Loughborough University

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by the events, ideas, and people that have shaped our world, Loughborough’s BA (Hons) History offers a chance to explore the past in a way that’s deeply relevant to today. This course goes beyond dates and facts — it helps you understand how societies evolve, how power shifts, and how culture and ideas influence the modern world. It’s perfect for curious thinkers who want to challenge perspectives, build strong analytical skills, and open doors to a wide range of careers.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Laying the Foundations

Your first year builds the essential skills every historian needs — from analysing sources to constructing persuasive arguments. You’ll explore major global themes in modules like The Atlantic World: The Americas, Europe, and Africa since the 15th Century and Power, Politics & Ideology in Modern Europe, and learn how historians approach evidence in What is History?. Modules such as Art and Visual Culture since 1850 introduce you to new ways of interpreting the past through culture and visual media.

Year 2 – Broadening Your Perspective

In your second year, you’ll have the freedom to shape your degree around the areas that interest you most. You might examine China’s rise in Modern China in a Global Perspective, investigate colonial legacies in African States and Nations: Before and After Colonialism, or delve into political ideas in History of Political Thought. These modules sharpen your analytical skills and deepen your understanding of how historical events connect across continents and centuries.

Final Year – Specialising and Showcasing Your Expertise

Your final year is your chance to focus on the topics you’re most passionate about and put your skills into practice. You’ll undertake an independent Dissertation, exploring a historical question of your choice, and choose from advanced modules such as After Empire: South Asia since 1945, The Soviet Security State, 1917–present, and War in the 21st Century. By the end of the degree, you’ll be equipped to analyse complex evidence, communicate powerful ideas, and contribute original insights — abilities that employers in many fields highly value.

Focus areas: Political history, cultural and social change, empire and post-colonial studies, global history (Africa, Asia, Europe, Americas), visual culture and art history

Learning outcomes: Develop advanced analytical and research skills, interpret and evaluate historical evidence, construct compelling historical arguments, connect past events to global contexts, and communicate complex ideas with clarity and confidence
