Program Overview

Keele’s Modern History and Politics degree gives you a chance to explore how the world has changed—and how those changes continue to shape the political decisions we see today. Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year builds a strong foundation in both subjects. You’ll study big turning points through modules like Defining Moments in World History, c.1000–2000 and explore political ideas in Making Sense of Politics. You’ll start developing the skills historians and political analysts rely on—interpreting evidence, comparing arguments, and understanding how the past continues to influence modern politics.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll dig deeper into the themes that shape today’s world. Core modules such as Themes, Debates and Sources in History and Global Democracy under Threat: Resilience or Retreat? help you look at power, conflict and society from fresh perspectives. You can also choose modules like World Wars and the Age of Extremes or Public Policy and How To Make It, allowing you to connect historical developments with modern government and policymaking.

Year 3

Your final year gives you the freedom to specialise in the areas you care most about. You might explore topics like The Twisted Road to Hitler, The Dark Side of Politics, or Parliamentary Studies. You’ll also complete a significant independent project—either a Final Year History Project or a Politics/IR Dissertation—where you get to research a topic you feel passionate about and sharpen your ability to think and write independently.
