1 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re drawn to understanding how societies work — from the ideas that shape our values to the political decisions that guide nations and the economic forces behind everyday life — this degree gives you the perfect blend of all three. It’s ideal for students who want to think deeply, analyse real-world issues, and build the kind of problem-solving and communication skills that employers value across many sectors.
Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year (Year 0)
Your foundation year gives you the time and support to settle into university-level study. You’ll work on your academic writing, research and critical-thinking skills through modules like Passport to Success: Essential Skills for University Life, while subjects such as Approaches to the Humanities and Politically Shaping, Philosophically Responding: The Contemporary World introduce you to the key ideas you’ll explore later in the degree. By the end of the year, you’ll feel ready to step confidently into Year 1.
Year 1
In your first full year, you begin to build your grounding in all three disciplines. You’ll explore how political systems function, how economic models shape decision-making and how philosophical thinking helps you question assumptions and evaluate arguments. This year lays the foundation for understanding complex issues from multiple perspectives.
Year 2
Your second year lets you dig deeper and start making connections across the subjects. You might explore global justice in philosophy, comparative political systems, or international economics. You’ll also start developing more advanced analytical and research skills, preparing you for specialist study in your final year.
Year 3 (Final Year)
In your final year, you bring everything together. You’ll take advanced modules in your areas of interest and complete an independent research project where you investigate a topic you genuinely care about — whether it’s economic policy, political theory or a major philosophical issue. By graduation, you’ll have a strong portfolio and a clear sense of your academic strengths.

One of the biggest advantages of studying PPE at Manchester Met with a Foundation Year is that you’re never just learning theory — you’re constantly applying it. The programme is built to help you grow your confidence step by step, from developing essential academic skills in Year 0 to tackling complex political, economic and philosophical questions in the later years. You’ll work with digital tools, collaborate with classmates, learn through real case studies, and use MMU’s modern, well-resourced campus to support your academic journey.
You’ll also benefit from strong IT and library support, interactive learning spaces, and a teaching team that brings current debates and real-world examples into every module. This ensures you’re not only understanding the ideas behind PPE, but also learning to use them in practical, meaningful ways.
Here’s what your hands-on and immersive learning experience will look like:
Digital learning and PC-based sessions in the Foundation Year, where you work with online research tools, academic platforms and computer labs to build skills in data literacy, academic writing and independent study.
Collaborative group activities and seminar-style learning in modules such as Approaches to the Humanities and Politically Shaping, Philosophically Responding: The Contemporary World. You’ll debate ideas, present arguments, break down social issues, and learn to defend your perspective with evidence.
Real case-study analysis across all three disciplines, helping you understand how philosophical ideas influence political decisions and how economic systems shape everyday life.
A gradual build-up to independent research, where you learn research methods early on and eventually complete a substantial final-year project that brings together politics, philosophy and economics in a topic you choose.
Access to MMU’s excellent digital resources, including subject-specific databases, online journals, academic software tools, and IT facilities that students consistently rate highly for convenience and support.
Use of modern study environments, such as flexible learning spaces, seminar rooms designed for interactive discussion, and a well-equipped library where you’ll find materials for all three disciplines.
Continuous academic support, especially during the Foundation Year, where you learn how to write academically, analyse texts, use evidence correctly, manage your time and approach university-level assignments with confidence.
Learning informed by active research, as your lecturers bring contemporary debates, political developments, philosophical arguments and real economic challenges directly into class discussions.
A PPE degree from Manchester Met gives you a powerful mix of skills — you learn to analyse problems like an economist, think critically like a philosopher, and understand systems like a political scientist. Because of this, graduates step confidently into roles such as Policy Analyst, Political or Economic Research Assistant, Community Engagement Coordinator, or Public Affairs/Consulting Officer. The blend of three disciplines, plus the structured support you receive from the Foundation Year onwards, means you finish your degree with a strong academic background and the practical skills employers expect.
To help you move smoothly into your career, MMU supports you at every step:
Dedicated Careers & Employability support, including CV building, interview practice, placement search support and access to employer networks.
Strong graduate outcomes, with around 88% of students in related social science areas going into work or further study within 15 months.
Industry-informed curriculum, as the PPE degree is co-designed with employer input to ensure you’re learning skills that genuinely matter in the professional world.
Long-term career value, thanks to the versatile capabilities you gain — critical thinking, data handling, ethical judgment, policy understanding and interdisciplinary analysis — all highly valued in government, NGOs, finance, consulting and international organisations.
A strong final-year portfolio, where your research project and interdisciplinary coursework help you stand out to employers or postgraduate programmes.
Further Academic Progression:
After completing your PPE degree, you’ll have multiple pathways. Many graduates continue into master’s degrees in Public Policy, International Relations, Philosophy, Economics, Global Justice, or Political Communication. Others take a research-focused route such as an MRes or PhD, especially if they’re interested in academic research, policy think-tanks or analytical roles.
