Journalism BA(Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Brighton

Program Overview

Year 1
Your journey begins by building a solid foundation in journalism. You’ll dive into core skills like news writing, media ethics, and digital reporting techniques. Expect to explore the basics of print, broadcast, and online journalism, with plenty of opportunities to sharpen your story-finding and interviewing skills in a friendly, hands-on environment.

Year 2
This is where things get exciting. You’ll deepen your investigative reporting and multimedia storytelling abilities—think podcasts, video packages, and social media narratives. The emphasis shifts to real-world practice: pitching stories, experimenting with different platforms, and collaborating with peers on creative journalistic projects. It's also the year when you might start working with local media outlets—an early taste of the industry.

Year 3
Your final year focuses on professional readiness. You’ll complete a capstone or major project, perhaps running a digital news site, producing a documentary, or leading a live broadcast. Meanwhile, you’ll have opportunities to work in placement schemes or freelance in regional newsrooms. You'll get personalized guidance on career paths in journalism—whether that’s reporting, editing, content strategy, or media production.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Seek out placements with local media—from regional newspapers to community radio stations—so you get a true sense of what being a journalist is really like.

  • Join student-run media societies and clubs, where you can try your hand at everything from photojournalism to video editing, working creatively and collaboratively.

  • Attend workshops and masterclasses led by experienced journalists—bringing expert insight into your learning.
