BA Hons Media Communication Cultures

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Leeds Beckett University

Program Overview

Leeds Beckett University offers the BA (Hons) Media Communication Cultures, a degree that explores how media shapes society, culture, and everyday life. The course combines theory with practical skills, giving students the tools to critically analyse media as well as create their own content. Across three years, you will study a range of topics including media theory, digital communication, journalism, advertising, film, and cultural studies. The program not only develops academic knowledge but also prepares students for creative and professional roles within the media and cultural industries.

Year 1:
In your first year, you’ll be introduced to the foundations of media and cultural studies. You will explore how media influences society, gain insight into communication theories, and start developing practical skills in digital production and media analysis. The focus is on building a broad understanding of the media landscape and learning to think critically about the ways culture and communication interact.

Year 2:
The second year allows you to dive deeper into specialist areas. You’ll study global media cultures, media ethics, digital storytelling, and the role of technology in shaping communication. You will also have opportunities to take on practical projects, exploring media production and communication strategies in more detail. The emphasis here is on applying theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts, preparing you for both professional practice and independent research.

Year 3:
In your final year, you will undertake an independent research dissertation or creative project, allowing you to focus on a subject that inspires you most. Alongside this, you’ll study advanced modules that explore the latest issues in media and culture, from the influence of social media platforms to global communication trends. This year is about consolidating your knowledge, refining your skills, and building a strong portfolio that showcases your abilities to future employers.

Curriculum Structure:
The course blends academic learning with hands-on opportunities. You will engage with:
• Core modules in media theory, cultural studies, and communication.
• Creative and digital practice projects that give you practical experience.
• Research training to support your dissertation or final-year project.
• Opportunities to tailor modules around your own interests in media, culture, or communication.
