BA (Hons) Society, Culture and Media

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of East Anglia

Program Overview

The University of East Anglia offers a Bachelor of Arts in Society, Culture and Media, which is designed to give students an overview yet in-depth understanding of how societies function, how our lives are determined by culture, and the immense role of the media in communication in the modern era. The course encourages critical thinking and analysis of social issues in terms of different disciplines such as sociology, cultural studies, and media theory. Students work with a sophisticated grasp of how identities, communities, and cultural practices are formed and represented.

Curriculum Structure:
The degree aims to balance theoretical awareness with empirical sensibility, enabling students to engage with both classical and contemporary debates in social and cultural studies. Key components include:

  • Core modules exploring social theory, cultural practice, and media analysis.

  • Modules covering issues such as identity, power, media industries, and digital culture.

  • Opportunities to explore the impact of media technologies on society, and how culture intersects with politics, race, gender, and globalization.

  • A final-year dissertation or research project where students apply their knowledge in an area of their choice, acquiring independent research skills and critical inquiry.
