Program Overview

  • The University of Hertfordshire offers a BA (Hons) English Literature and Media, a degree which seeks to equip students with a deep understanding of literary tradition, contemporary media, and modes of communication. The course is balanced with theoretical study and vocational competence, leading to a variety of careers in media, publishing, education, and creative industries.

  • Year 1: Students are introduced to the fundamentals of literature, language, and media studies. Key modules include critical reading, analytical writing, and communication skills, alongside an introduction to key media concepts and technologies.

  • Year 2: Students can develop specialist options in digital media, journalism, film studies, and creative writing. Practical exercises are used to develop technical capability as well as conceptual understanding, and students begin to develop a personal portfolio of work.

  • Year 3: The final year includes students consolidating learning and skills with higher-level modules and a capstone project or dissertation. This provides the opportunity to engage with an in-depth research project or meaningful media production, demonstrating mastery of literary analysis as well as media production.

 

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Internships and Work Placements: Students can gain practical experience in media organizations, publishing houses, and digital content companies, allowing them to make professional connections and industry-specific competencies.

  • Research Opportunities: Students are allowed to pursue individual research projects guided by faculty members that cultivate critical thinking and analytical abilities.

  • Creative and Media Projects: The capacity for working on film, journalism, and digital media projects allows for practical skills development in writing, editing, and production.

  • Student Societies and Activities: Participation in clubs, literary societies, and media workshops encourages teamwork, creativity, and leadership, both within and outside of work.
