BA (Hons) Mass Communications

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Hertfordshire

Program Overview

The University of Hertfordshire offers the BA (Hons) Mass Communications, a dynamic and versatile degree designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the rapidly evolving media landscape. This program blends theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing graduates for diverse careers in journalism, broadcasting, digital media, public relations, and corporate communications. Students learn to analyse the role of media in society, develop compelling content across different platforms, and engage effectively with audiences in a global context.

Curriculum Structure:
The Mass Communications program is carefully structured to ensure a balance between academic theory and hands-on learning. Students explore topics ranging from media theory and communication strategies to digital production and storytelling techniques.

Year 1:
You’ll build a strong foundation in media history, communication theories, and audience analysis. Core modules focus on the principles of journalism, visual communication, and the basics of digital content creation. Practical workshops help you gain confidence in using industry-standard tools and technologies.

Year 2:
This year deepens your understanding of media production and communication in practice. You will engage with topics such as investigative journalism, public relations strategy, global media systems, and ethical issues in communication. There’s a stronger emphasis on practical projects, including collaborative productions and multimedia campaigns.

Year 3:
In your final year, you’ll have the opportunity to specialise in your chosen media field. Modules may include advanced media production, branding and promotion, political communication, and audience research. The capstone project allows you to apply your learning to a substantial piece of independent work—either academic research or a creative media production.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)
