Medicine (MBChB)

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bolton

Program Overview

The University of Bolton's MBChB Medicine program is a five-year, full-time undergraduate course designed to equip students with comprehensive medical knowledge and clinical skills. The curriculum is divided into two main phases:

Phase 1: Years 1 and 2

  • Curriculum Focus:
Covers the fundamental sciences underpinning medicine, including molecular, cellular, applied, population, and social sciences. Students also begin developing communication and clinical examination skills.

  • Teaching Methods:
Delivered through lectures, small group work, seminars, and practical sessions, with early patient contact integrated through community-based attachments.

  • Assessments:
Continuous assessment through written exams, practicals, and coursework to build a solid scientific and clinical foundation.

Phase 2: Years 3 to 5

  • Year 3: Clinical Clerkships
Students rotate through core specialties such as medicine, surgery, and general practice, applying classroom learning in real clinical environments.

  • Year 4: Specialty Placements
Includes placements in psychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and other specialties, expanding clinical exposure and experience with diverse patient populations.

  • Year 5: Foundation Assistantships and Elective
Prepares students for the responsibilities of a junior doctor. Includes assistantships in key clinical areas and an elective period to explore personal interests or international healthcare systems.

Clinical Training Facilities

Teaching is based at the £40 million Institute of Medical Sciences, located within the grounds of the Royal Bolton NHS Foundation Trust. The facility includes cutting-edge simulation suites and a 4D learning environment designed to mimic real clinical scenarios, providing immersive training opportunities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Both the University of Bolton and the University of Manchester offer experiential learning opportunities in their medicine programs, encompassing clinical placements, research projects, and internships. Here's an overview of what each institution provides:

Clinical Placements:

  • Students engage in clinical placements at the Royal Bolton NHS Foundation Trust hospital, gaining hands-on experience in a real healthcare setting.

Research and Projects:

  • The program emphasizes a "Teaching Intensive, Research Informed" philosophy, integrating research elements into the curriculum.

Internships and Work Experience:

  • The university's Careers and Employability Service assists students in securing internships and placements to enhance employability and practical skills.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Medical graduates in the UK follow a structured career progression pathway after completing their MBBS or equivalent degree. Upon graduation, they enter the Foundation Programme, a two-year paid training period (FY1 and FY2) where they rotate through various specialties to gain broad clinical experience. Successful completion of this leads to full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

After Foundation Training, doctors choose a specialty and apply for Core or Specialty Training. Core Training typically lasts 2–3 years and is followed by higher Specialty Training, while some fields (like General Practice or Surgery) offer run-through training from the start. Specialty training durations vary—General Practice takes around 3 years, while hospital specialties can take 5–8+ years, depending on the discipline. After completing training, doctors become Consultants in hospital specialties or General Practitioners (GPs).

In terms of further study, many graduates pursue postgraduate qualifications to enhance their expertise or academic profile. Options include:

  • Master’s degrees (e.g., MSc in Public Health, Medical Education, Clinical Research, or Global Health)

  • PhDs or MD(Res) for careers in academia or research

  • Diplomas and Certificates in fields like Tropical Medicine, Radiology, or Dermatology

  • Intercalated BSc or MBPhD programmes (during or after undergraduate studies for research-focused pathways)

This combination of structured clinical training and academic opportunities allows UK-trained doctors to build flexible, rewarding careers in medicine, academia, global health, and beyond.
