Progression & Future Opportunities

Medical graduates in the UK follow a structured career progression pathway after completing their MBBS or equivalent degree. Upon graduation, they enter the Foundation Programme, a two-year paid training period (FY1 and FY2) where they rotate through various specialties to gain broad clinical experience. Successful completion of this leads to full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).

After Foundation Training, doctors choose a specialty and apply for Core or Specialty Training. Core Training typically lasts 2–3 years and is followed by higher Specialty Training, while some fields (like General Practice or Surgery) offer run-through training from the start. Specialty training durations vary—General Practice takes around 3 years, while hospital specialties can take 5–8+ years, depending on the discipline. After completing training, doctors become Consultants in hospital specialties or General Practitioners (GPs).

In terms of further study, many graduates pursue postgraduate qualifications to enhance their expertise or academic profile. Options include:

Additional Information & Requirements

A Levels - Those taking a fourth A2 subject will not be at an advantage to those taking three. For the purposes of meeting our entry requirements, an A* cannot compensate for a B in another subject, so we will not accept A*A*B instead of AAA. EPQs are not considered within our scoring. Level 3 Core Maths is not considered within our scoring. A minimum of 6 GCSEs grade 6 or above is required in Maths, English Language, Biology and Chemistry or Dual Science. Please note that applicants applying with these minimums are unlikely to be shortlisted to interview and that scoring is based on 8 GCSEs.
IBDP - Overall score of 36 points with a mark of 6 in 3 Higher Level subjects which must include Chemistry and Biology. If English and Maths not offered at GCSE, this must be offered with a mark of at least 5 at Standard level.
Indian - Grade XII: CBSE/CISCE/West Bengal boards require 75% overall in 5 subjects including Chemistry, Biology, and Maths (or Physics with Grade X Maths at 80%), while other state boards require 80% overall with the same subjects (or Physics with Grade X Maths at 85%).
American - 3 Advanced Placement tests with a mark of 5 in each including Chemistry and Biology. SAT 1290 (650 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 620 in Maths).
18 years of age at the start of the course date.

Resits - From the 2026 entry onwards, the School of Medicine at Leeds will accept one resit attempt per Level 3 (A2) and per Level 2 (GCSE) qualification without mitigating circumstances.
