The BM (Hons) Midwifery at Bangor University blends evidence-based theory, immersive simulation and extensive clinical placements so you graduate as a confident, registered midwife. It’s ideal for students passionate about caring for women, newborns and families, offering a strong foundation in physiological birth and matched placements across North Wales.
Curriculum structure
Year 1
In the first year you’ll explore modules such as Being an Accountable, Autonomous Professional Midwife and Safe and Effective Midwifery Care – Promoting and Providing Continuity of Care and Carer. You’ll engage in foundational theory around anatomy, physiology, public health and continuity of care, then apply this in early clinical placements in community or midwife-led birth units.
Year 2
In year two your study deepens with modules like Universal Care for Women and Newborn Infants and Additional Care for Women and Newborn Infants with Complications. You’ll spend more time in hospital and community settings, driving your decision-making skills, managing more complex cases and refining your midwifery practice in real-world contexts.
Year 3
In the final year you’ll study modules such as Promoting Excellence: The Midwife as Colleague, Scholar and Leader and The Midwife as Skilled Practitioner. You’ll lead care episodes and integrate your academic and clinical learning to assume full midwifery responsibilities in placement—preparing you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and entry into professional practice
On the Bangor University BM (Hons) Midwifery you’ll be immersed in real-world clinical care and simulation from the very start — you’ll spend around half your time in live hospital and community placements and the other half in state-of-the-art simulation labs. You’ll train using advanced equipment (including a “pregnant” manikin, VR tools and fully realistic birthing environments) and engage with practice settings across North Wales, giving you the skills and confidence to step into professional practice straight after graduation.
Here are some of the hands-on learning opportunities you’ll experience:
Simulation-based training equipment – The course uses lifelike manikins, including a ‘pregnant’ manikin which gives birth, and VR simulation tools in the clinical skills suites.
50/50 split between teaching and clinical practice – Approximately half of your learning takes place in clinical placements in community settings, maternity units and midwife-led units across North Wales.
Advanced clinical skills suites and birthing-unit facilities – You’ll learn in dedicated midwifery environments with modern simulation labs and birthing-suite replicas.
Elective placements and varied settings – Opportunities are available for elective placements (within the UK or internationally), rural/remote placements and home-birth practice experiences.
Supportive bilingual and regional practice options – With bilingual Welsh/English-medium practice supported and placements across diverse geography, you’ll gain exposure to varied healthcare contexts.
With a BSc (Hons) Midwifery (BM) from Bangor University, you’ll step into professional roles such as Registered Midwife, Community Midwife, Neonatal Unit Midwife, or Maternity Services Leader—and the programme’s strong outcomes support this career path:
The course is fully approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), so on graduation you’ll be eligible for UK midwifery registration.
Graduate data shows average earnings of around £27,000 fifteen months after graduation, and 95% of graduates were working and/or studying at that time.
The university partners closely with local health boards—such as the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board—ensuring practice learning is embedded with real-world clinical experience.
