Curriculum Structure

Year One – Building Your Foundation

Your first year gives you the essential grounding you need as a future midwife. You’ll study modules like Introduction to Midwifery Studies, The Antenatal Woman and Fetus, and Intrapartum Woman and Fetus, which introduce you to the full journey of pregnancy and birth. You’ll also start Midwifery Clinical Practice 1, learning how to apply your skills in real healthcare settings while developing safe medication knowledge through Pharmacology. Caring for new mothers and babies is another key part — covered in Postnatal Mother and Newborn Infant.

Year Two – Developing Confidence and Clinical Depth

In year two, you begin to take on more responsibility. Modules like Supporting the Vulnerable Woman, Family and Newborn Infant and Complex Conditions in the Mother and Newborn Infant help you understand how to adapt care for different situations — from social challenges to medical complications. You’ll continue growing academically through Enhancing Midwifery Studies, while Midwifery Clinical Practice 2 strengthens your professional identity as you handle more complex hands-on tasks.

Year Three – Becoming a Skilled, Independent Practitioner

Your final year prepares you for the realities of midwifery practice. In Advanced Skills in the Care of the Woman and Newborn Infant, you’ll learn how to make safe, independent clinical decisions and manage emergencies with confidence. The module Introduction to Global Perspectives on Public Health broadens your understanding of how midwifery fits into wider healthcare systems. You’ll also complete Midwifery Clinical Practice 3 and create a Research Proposal, helping you think like an evidence-based practitioner.
