Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Keele University, the Midwifery BSc (Hons) program is all about learning by doing. Half of your time on the course is spent in real clinical settings, giving you invaluable experience in hospitals and community services. You’ll gain hands-on practice in places like the Royal Stoke Hospital, which has a Level 3 neonatal unit and a birth centre, as well as Birmingham Women’s Hospital and Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital, preparing you to handle a variety of situations with confidence and skill.

In addition to placements, you’ll refine your skills in simulation-based learning using mannequins and patient simulators in our Clinical Skills Lab. The program also emphasizes teamwork across healthcare disciplines, so you’ll collaborate with students from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and social work—mirroring the real-world, multidisciplinary nature of midwifery care.

Here’s what experiential learning looks like in practice:

  • Clinical Placements: Gain experience across antenatal and postnatal wards, delivery suites, early pregnancy units, and maternity assessment units within a 60-mile radius of Keele.
