Midwifery with Registration as a Midwife BSc

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Kings College London

Program Overview

The King’s College London BSc (Hons) Midwifery with Registration as a Midwife is designed to equip you with the clinical skills, evidence-based knowledge and professional mindset required to support women, babies and families throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond. It suits individuals committed to compassionate, high-quality care who want to integrate hands-on clinical experience with rigorous academic study.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:

In the first year you will engage with foundational modules such as Biosciences for Midwifery Practice, Foundations of Midwifery Practice and Learning in Practice 1 (30 credits each) alongside Public Health and Health Promotion. These modules help you develop your understanding of human biology, the role of the midwife and initial clinical practice, preparing you for placement settings.

Year 2:

In your second year you’ll build on this with further practice-based modules and increased clinical exposure, managing aspects of maternity care and sharpening decision-making skills in midwifery practice. You’ll learn how to apply public health concepts in maternal care, develop deeper bioscience knowledge and lead aspects of midwifery practice in the clinical setting.

Year 3:

In the final year you’ll further your independence and leadership in midwifery, culminating in your own caseload management, elective experiences and the student-led midwifery project or research/quality improvement module. You’ll integrate your learning in a holistic way – supporting women and families through the continuum of care and preparing for professional registration as a midwife.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the King’s College London BSc (Hons) Midwifery with Registration as a Midwife, you’ll build real-world proficiency through a mix of simulation, clinical placements and hands-on learning in ĺive maternity settings. You won’t just watch — from early on you’ll spend time in one of London’s leading NHS teaching hospitals, practicing skills, responding to real care situations and preparing as a confident midwife practitioner. And these experiences are supported by dedicated facilities and tools to help you master both clinical and academic sides of the profession:

Here’s a breakdown of how your practical training is structured:

  • Simulation and placement settings: You’ll practice emergency and routine midwifery scenarios through simulation sessions and then apply learning on placement in partner NHS trusts (placement years 1-3).

  • Clinical partner hospitals: The programme is linked with two Academic Health Science Centres and teaching hospitals where you will work in real maternity units, gaining experience as part of the clinical team.

  • Elective opportunities: During year 2 (or later) you have the option of an elective placement—nationally or internationally—where you can work in diverse settings such as rural Scotland or Tanzania.

  • Structured learning modules in practice: Modules such as Learning in Practice 1-3 integrate academic learning with supervised clinical hours so you mirror shift patterns and responsibilities similar to qualified midwives.

  • Closely supported cohort and mentoring: The programme offers a buddy scheme pairing senior students with first-years, as well as access to midwife-clinicians and academic staff, supporting you through intensively practical years.
