BSc (Hons) Midwifery (Post Experience/ 2nd Registration)

2 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Oxford Brookes University

Program Overview

The Oxford Brookes University BSc (Hons) Midwifery (Post Experience / 2nd Registration) empowers you to transition from adult-nursing practice to a full midwifery qualification, blending advanced theory with hands-on clinical placements across maternity services. This degree is perfect for experienced adult-registered nurses who are ready to specialise in midwifery and support women, babies and families across pregnancy, birth and postnatal care.

Curriculum structure:

Year 1: You’ll begin by studying core modules like Midwifery Practice 1: Core Skills, Public Health in Midwifery 1 and Anatomy & Physiology for Midwives, designed to build your foundational midwifery knowledge and professional identity. Your adult-nursing background means you’ll rapidly progress into clinical placements in hospital and community settings, gaining supervised experience in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care.

Year 2: In the second year you’ll engage with modules such as Midwifery Practice 3: Childbirth Emergencies, Childbearing & Neonatal Complexities and Midwifery Practice 6: Towards Autonomy, focusing on higher-level midwifery responsibilities. You’ll lead parts of the care pathway, apply research and evidence to practice, and prepare for autonomous professional midwifery practice.

Year 3: N/A – Note: As this is a 2-year accelerated route (for second-registration) the course completes at the end of Year 2, enabling you to register as a midwife and enter professional practice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the BSc (Hons) Midwifery (Post-Experience / 2nd Registration) programme at Oxford Brookes University, you’ll transform your adult-nursing background into midwifery excellence through immersive placements and advanced simulation from early on. You’ll practise in real hospital wards, community units and midwife-led settings — backed by simulation suites and specialist facilities that mirror the real environments you’ll work in once qualified.

Here’s how the experience is structured:

  • Clinical placements across the maternity continuum: You’ll complete placements in hospital labour wards, midwife-led units and community settings across Oxfordshire (including the Women’s Centre at John Radcliffe Hospital and free-standing midwifery units).

  • Simulation and skills labs: At the Oxford School of Nursing & Midwifery’s Marston Road site you’ll use state-of-the-art simulation suites with mannequins and realistic maternity scenarios to practice safely before live placements.

  • Multidisciplinary team learning & e-learning tools: You’ll learn alongside other healthcare students and have access to the university’s digital learning platform (“Brookes Virtual”) for lectures, handouts and online resources, allowing you to revisit key concepts anytime.

  • Partnerships with local NHS trusts: The programme is developed in close collaboration with NHS trusts (e.g., Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) ensuring your practical experience reflects real-world maternity service needs.
