BSc in Midwifery

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queens University Belfast

Program Overview

The Queen’s University Belfast BSc (Hons) Midwifery offers a balanced blend of academic theory and real-world clinical practice, preparing you for a professional career as a registered midwife. It’s ideal for caring individuals who are passionate about women’s and family-centred care, and want to gain hands-on experience through simulation and placements from early on.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Stage 1):

You’ll begin foundational studies via modules such as Professional Midwifery Practice, Embedding Professional Midwifery Practice and simulated clinical scenarios through the KN Cheung SK Chin InterSim Centre. This year introduces you to anatomy, physiology, professional midwifery roles and simulation-based emergency care in a safe environment.

Year 2 (Stage 2):

In the second year your coursework shifts to pregnancy, birth and care pathways including universal and additional care. Modules emphasise team-based simulation, community placements and leadership skills in maternity services. You work in small groups and deepen your midwifery practice through more varied clinical experiences.

Year 3 (Stage 3):

During the final year you’ll assume greater responsibility in clinical settings, engaging in modules focused on professionalism, ethics, and inter-professional care. You’ll lead parts of midwifery care, apply emergency response learning, manage continuity of care and prepare for registration as a midwife.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the Queen’s University Belfast BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme you’ll gain real-world skills through a carefully balanced mix of simulation, clinical placement and team-based learning — helping you transition confidently from student to registered midwife. From immersive simulation suites to structured placements in hospital and community settings, you’ll experience what midwifery practice actually feels like as you develop your clinical judgement and professional identity. Here’s how this all works in practice:

  • Clinical Education Centre: You’ll learn in purpose-built simulation rooms that replicate hospital wards, enabling safe yet realistic practice of emergencies and maternity care situations.

  • Placements through NHS Trusts: The course includes regular practice learning modules within hospital labour wards, community midwifery teams and birth-centre settings across Northern Ireland, helping you apply theory in real-care environments.

  • Inter-professional simulation & e-learning: You’ll use the University’s digital learning environment, team-based workshops and inter-professional scenario simulations alongside nursing, pharmacy and medicine students to reflect team-based maternity care.

  • Supportive library & learning infrastructure: The Biomedical Libraries and learning development services provide resources, study spaces and online tools to help integrate your practical experience with academic work.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the Queen’s University Belfast BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme typically move directly into roles such as Registered Midwife, Community Midwife, Caseload/Continuity-of-Carer Midwife or Specialist Midwife in areas like neonatal, perinatal mental health or leadership. And here’s how the university supports this transition into professional life:

  • University services: The School of Nursing & Midwifery’s Careers & Work Placements team offers career consultations at the Elmwood Student Centre, employer-mentoring, placement support and tailored midwifery-role guidance.

  • Employment stats & salary figures: According to Graduate Outcomes data, 85% of recent midwifery graduates were working 15 months after graduating, with average salary around £25,000 (typical range £24,500-£26,500).

  • University–industry partnerships: The programme partners with Northern Ireland NHS Trusts for a 50% practice-learning model and has simulation and clinical-skills suites at the KN Cheung SK Chin InterSim Centre to prepare you for placement.

  • Long-term accreditation value: The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), so upon graduation you’re eligible to register as a midwife in the UK.

  • Graduation outcomes: The programme emphasises not just immediate employment but also offers pathways into specialist midwifery roles, research, education and leadership within maternity services.
