This programme equips you to become a fully-qualified midwife, providing personalised care from conception, through labour, to the postnatal period, while supporting women and families in diverse settings. You’ll learn to work autonomously and in teams, using evidence-based practice and real-world placements to build the skills that make a difference in maternity services.
Curriculum structure
Year 1
In your first year you’ll engage with modules such as Beginning Midwifery Knowledge, Midwifery Care and Practice 1 and Midwifery Care and Practice 2. You’ll start developing your understanding of physiological childbirth, basic midwifery skills, holistic care and teamwork, laying the foundation for practice through theory and supervised placement.
Year 2
During year two you’ll explore Developing Midwifery Knowledge, Midwifery Care and Practice 3 and Midwifery Care and Practice 4. Here you’ll build on your skills to manage more complex scenarios, stronger clinical decision-making, deeper public health awareness and enhanced midwifery practice in varied settings.
Year 3
In your final year you’ll study Questioning Midwifery Knowledge, Midwifery Care and Practice 5a & 5b and Midwifery Care and Practice 6 (Caseloading). This is where you assume greater responsibility, manage a caseload of women under supervision, refine your leadership and autonomous practice, and integrate research and advanced practice into your work.
On the BSc (Hons) Midwifery programme at the University of Bradford you’ll spend significant time building hands-on skills using advanced facilities that mirror real maternity settings, alongside placements that bring theory straight into practice. You’ll practise in simulation environments designed for midwifery scenarios, use digital tools for reflection and assessment, and engage in real-world clinical experiences across hospital and community settings.
Here’s how the experiential learning works:
Horton Sim Suite 360 – A dedicated simulation suite where you role-play birth scenarios, obstetric emergencies and neonatal e-situations using realistic equipment and immersive environments.
Nursing and Child Simulation Suite & Wet Lab – Practice midwifery and neonatal care in facilities equipped for hands-on learning in clinical skills, including mock wards and procedure labs.
Clinical placements across partnering NHS Trusts – You’ll spend around 50% of your time in practice, moving through antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, community and neonatal settings under supervision.
Digital e-portfolio / ongoing record of achievement – Your clinical practice is tracked using an online record where you reflect, receive feedback, and monitor your progress in real settings.
Team-based problem-solving and inter-professional learning – The curriculum uses problem-based learning to develop complex decision-making and teamwork skills essential for midwifery.
