MNurs (Children’s / Mental Health)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Bradford

Program Overview

The MNurs (Children’s / Mental Health) at University of Bradford blends two vital nursing fields—children’s care and mental health—so you graduate with eligibility to register in both areas and stand out in a changing healthcare system. You’ll engage in both academic study and extensive clinical practice, developing the compassion, evidence-based skills and adaptability needed to thrive across varied specialties.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

In your first year you’ll lay the foundation through modules such as Nursing Foundations, Understanding People and Health, Health and Well-Being in Communities and Person-Centred Needs and Care Planning. You’ll begin practice learning in Practice 1, developing core nursing knowledge and clinical skills while exploring how children and young people’s care and mental health-focused support intersect.

Year 2

During the second year you move into more complex areas with modules like Contemporary Perspectives in Nursing, Leading and Managing Nursing Care, Health Numeracy Assessment, Implementing Person-Centred Care and Evaluating Person-Centred Care. Practice learning in Practice 2 enables you to apply leadership and decision-making skills within clinical contexts combining children’s and mental health nursing concepts.

Year 3

In your third year you’ll study core modules such as Critical Perspectives in Nursing, The Business of Caring, Co-ordinating and Leading Care and Improving Safety and Quality of Care. You’ll undertake Practice 3 which deepens your ability to manage complex cases in multidisciplinary settings and prepare for full professional responsibility across both children’s and mental health nursing.

Year 4

The final year is tailored to your dual-field registration: you’ll study modules like Optimising Health Outcomes for People with Complex Needs, Innovation in Nursing Practice 1 & 2, Transition to Dual Registration and complete Practice 4. This stage prepares you for autonomous, high-impact practice, leadership and integration of children’s nursing and mental health care.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the MNurs (Children’s / Mental Health) programme at the University of Bradford, you’ll build your practical nursing skills through a combination of simulation-based environments and real clinical placements, enabling you to step into dual-field nursing with confidence. You’ll train in purpose-built facilities like the Sim Suite, Wet Lab and Child Simulation Suite, plus follow up your hands-on sessions with structured debrief and reflection. Here’s how that learning is delivered:

  • Use of the Sim Suite, Wet Lab and Child Simulation Suite, enabling realistic children and mental-health nursing scenarios.

  • Clinical placements across children’s health and mental-health settings, guided by professional nurses and real-world care teams.

  • Access to the DHEZ Tech House simulation environment (immersive tech-enabled settings) as part of nursing subject facilities.

  • Digital learning resources and practice portfolios recording your clinical hours and competency progression.

  • Dedicated library, IT and subject-specific resource support — for example, 89 % student agreement that subject-specific equipment was accessible.

Progression & Future Opportunities

With a qualification from the MNurs (Children’s / Mental Health) at the University of Bradford, you’ll be ready to step into professional nursing roles that span both children’s and mental-health care—such as Registered Nurse (Children’s), Registered Nurse (Mental Health), Specialist Paediatric/Mental Health Practitioner, or Nurse Team Leader—helping meet high demand across the health service. The dual-field nature of the degree adds flexibility and employability, preparing you for a broad range of clinical settings and allowing early career progression.

Here’s how your progression and opportunity look:

  • University Services: The University’s Careers & Employability Service offers tailored support for healthcare students—covering job search strategies with NHS employers, role-specific interview preparation, and networking events with placement trust partners.

  • Employment Stats & Salary Figures: For nursing and midwifery graduates at Bradford, around 86% progressed to work and/or further study 15 months after finishing.  Salary data indicates typical earnings around £26,000 after 3 years, rising to about £31,500 after 5 years for graduates in nursing.

  • University–Industry Partnerships: The programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for dual-field registration (Children’s & Mental Health).  The University works alongside local NHS trusts including the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Digital Health Enterprise Zone in research partnership.

  • Long-Term Accreditation Value: Dual registration means on graduation you’re eligible to register with the NMC in two fields, increasing your professional options and offering a strong foundation for specialist, leadership or education roles.
