3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Chester

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery program at the University of Chester is designed to empower students to become highly competent, compassionate midwives capable of providing exceptional woman-centered care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postnatal periods. The course blends theory with hands-on clinical experience in state-of-the-art simulation suites and NHS placements, preparing students to meet the highest professional standards.

Curriculum Structure:

In Year 1, students focus on foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology related to pregnancy, professional practice, and public health. Core modules include Exploring Professional Practice, The Human Body, Health and Disease, and Psychology, Wellbeing and Society. This year lays the groundwork in understanding women’s health and the midwife’s role.

Year 2 deepens knowledge with a focus on maternity-related complications, medical disorders in pregnancy, and the evidence base underpinning midwifery care. Modules such as Maternity Care and Medical Disorders and The Midwife as a Clinical Practitioner develop students’ ability to manage increasingly complex midwifery scenarios alongside continued clinical placements.

In Year 3, students refine their skills as accountable practitioners ready for professional registration. Modules include Autonomy, Communication and Advocacy, Universal Care for Women and Families, and Clinical Decision Making, while students engage in extensive supervised clinical placements, preparing for autonomous practice.
