BSc in Midwifery

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of East Anglia

Program Overview

The University of East Anglia BSc (Hons) Midwifery equips you with both the academic foundation and clinical practice to become a confident, compassionate midwife caring for women, babies and families from pregnancy through to early parenthood. It’s a perfect fit for those who want an active, meaningful role in healthcare, and who thrive on blending rigorous study with real-world placement experience.

Curriculum structure:

Year 1: You’ll begin with modules such as Foundations of Midwifery Practice, Anatomy and Physiology for Midwives, and Professional Midwifery: Caring and Communication. You’ll gain your first exposure to clinical placements, learning to support and care for women in pregnancy and early labour, while building key knowledge in anatomy, physiology and midwifery values.

Year 2: You’ll progress into modules like Midwifery Practice 2: Intrapartum Care & Transitional Care, Evidence-Based Midwifery, and Public Health and the Newborn. This year strengthens your hands-on skills in labour and delivery care, neonatal assessment, and public-health perspectives on family wellbeing, supported through increased placement time and clinical responsibility.

Year 3: You’ll take advanced modules such as Professional Midwifery: Leadership & Autonomy, Complex Midwifery: Additional Needs, and Midwifery Practice 3: Independent Caseloading. In your final year you’ll assume greater independence in clinical placements, lead aspects of midwifery care, manage caseloads, and prepare for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council so you’re industry-ready on graduation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the University of East Anglia’s BSc (Hons) Midwifery you’ll blend academic learning with real-life maternity care from early on. With placements built into the course and access to specialist teaching facilities and skills labs, you’ll develop the confidence and practical competence to work effectively in diverse maternity settings.

Here’s how the programme supports real-world, hands-on practice:

  • Clinical placements across NHS maternity settings: You’ll begin placement in your first year and engage in hospital, community and home-birth service settings throughout the programme.

  • Skills laboratories and simulation teaching: The curriculum includes lectures, seminars, e-learning and “skills laboratory activities” to replicate clinical scenarios and build practical midwifery skills.

  • International or voluntary placement opportunities: 2nd-year students have the option to choose voluntary experiences, including overseas midwifery settings.

  • Mandatory professional readiness checks: The course includes health screening, immunisation requirements, enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks and restrictions due to patient-facing placements.
