Midwifery (Blended Learning) BSc

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

The University of Leeds BSc Midwifery (Blended Learning) offers a future-focussed and flexible route into the midwifery profession, combining online theory with rich hands-on clinical experience designed to meet the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards. It’s ideal for those passionate about supporting women, birthing people and families, who want a career-ready degree that balances innovation and professional practice.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:

In your first year you begin the journey with Midwifery Basics (40 credits), where you’ll explore the fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for contemporary midwifery, including frameworks of care and evidence-based practice. You’ll also engage in community-based observational placements and digital learning modules, building your clinical awareness and confidence.

Year 2:

The second year deepens your practice with modules that integrate theory and placements across antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal settings, as well as explorations of cultural, bio-psychosocial and leadership dimensions of midwifery. You’ll apply decision-making, reflection and leadership skills, working more independently in clinical blocks across hospital and community settings.

Year 3:

In your final year you’ll focus on leadership, autonomy and elective experience — including a two-week optional observational placement abroad — and complete a capstone project or portfolio of evidence. You rotate through specialist clinical settings, taking responsibility for care pathways, and emerge ready for NMC registration as a midwife.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the University of Leeds BSc Midwifery (Blended Learning) you’ll build practical skills through a carefully balanced blend of digital learning and real-world clinical placements—about 50% theory and 50% practice. From simulation suites to full shift-pattern ward placements, you’ll step into the midwife’s role and deliver care in genuine settings, supported by the technology and flexibility of blended learning.

Here’s how your hands-on experience is structured:

  • Simulation and digital resources: You’ll use state-of-the-art clinical-skills facilities and online platforms where blended-learning lectures are recorded and accessible, enabling you to revisit anytime.

  • Clinical placements across settings: You’ll complete placements within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust covering hospital labour wards, antenatal clinics, community midwifery and neonatal units.

  • Flexible blended timetable: While simulations and placements must be face-to-face, much of your theory is accessible via live-stream and recorded sessions, making it easier to balance study with other commitments.

  • Global observational placement opportunity: In Year 3 you’ll have the chance, for those who meet criteria, to complete an observational placement abroad and experience midwifery practice in a different international context.

  • Supportive digital-learning and library infrastructure: You’ll benefit from Leeds’ extensive digital learning services, simulation labs and library systems to support study, reflection and research in midwifery practice.
