BSc (Hons) Midwifery

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Plymouth

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery at the University of Plymouth offers a fully accredited route into midwifery, combining rich academic study with placement-based practice so you emerge ready to register and begin work. It’s ideal for someone committed to supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood—and willing to embrace both theory and hands-on clinical care.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

In the first year you will explore modules such as MID401 Professional Midwifery Practice, MID402 Biology for Midwifery and MID403 Wider Determinants of Health and Wellbeing. You’ll build a foundation in biological sciences with emphasis on reproductive anatomy and physiology, and begin to engage in early clinical placement experiences in maternity and community settings.

Year 2

During the second year you will advance into midwifery knowledge and skills—building on placement learning and theory as you manage more structured care episodes. For example under Additional Skills for Midwifery and The Newborn Infant (as listed on other summaries) you’ll learn to support more complex clinical situations, neonatal care and decision-making across varied midwifery contexts.

Year 3

In your final year you’ll study leadership and practice integration—modules such as Leadership in Practice and Midwifery Practice 3 (as referenced in the broader module listing) will guide you to coordinate care, apply evidence, and assume responsibility for full midwifery proficiencies. You’ll complete extended placements that prepare you to work independently and begin your professional midwifery practice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On the BSc (Hons) Midwifery at University of Plymouth you’ll gain extensive practical midwifery experience through a blend of high-fidelity simulation and extensive placements, so you graduate ready to lead, care and innovate in maternity settings. Training takes place in state-of-the-art facilities like the hospital simulation ward at InterCity Place and you’ll spend roughly 50 % of your time in real placements across the South West of England.

Here are some of the hands-on learning features you’ll benefit from:

  • Hospital simulation ward at InterCity Place – A realistic simulation environment where midwifery students carry out simulated birth scenarios and use community-home suites for home-birth training.

  • Clinical Skills Resource Centre (CSRC) – Located in the Nancy Astor Building, this facility has the latest technology and practice equipment for midwifery preparation before placements.

  • 50 % time in clinical placement – You’ll work under supervision of registered midwives in NHS hospital and community settings across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, gaining real-world experience as you progress.

  • Inter-professional learning environment – Through the Plymouth Integrative Health and Social Care Education Centre you’ll collaborate with students from other health disciplines, enhancing your teamwork skills and readiness for practice.
