BSc Neuroscience

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Keele University

Program Overview

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll build a solid grounding in cell and molecular biology, human physiology and foundational neuroscience concepts. Core modules such as Introduction to Neuroscience, Fundamental Biosciences and Physiology, and Practical Laboratory Skills equip you with essential research techniques and understanding of how genes, cells, and bodily systems interact to support brain function. Weekly lab sessions in Keele’s Central Science Laboratories and Anatomy Suite ensure you get hands‑on experience early on.

Year 2

The second year takes you deeper into how the brain develops, learns and responds to drugs, while enhancing your experimental design and analytical skills. Modules like Neuroscience Research Methods, Neuroanatomy, and Learning & Memory explore brain function at structural and cellular levels, while you begin planning your own research with statistical and scientific design components. Lab‑work remains a core feature throughout.

Year 3

In your final year, you will tackle advanced core topics such as brain injury and disease, neuropathology and repair. You’ll complete a Research Project or Dissertation, where you carry out a lab‑based, review, bioinformatics or placement project under expert supervision. Optional modules allow you to specialise and tailor your studies to match your interests and career goals.

Focus areas: neuroanatomy & neurophysiology, molecular neuroscience & genetics, brain development & learning mechanisms, clinical pathology & repair, experimental research design, and elective specialisation.

Learning outcomes: you’ll graduate able to design and conduct neuroscience research—including data analysis and lab assays—critically evaluate findings on brain function and disease, communicate scientific results effectively, and apply your skills independently and in a team-based environment.

Professional alignment (accreditation): This programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, preparing you ideally for careers in research science, healthcare diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, clinical labs, science communication, or progression to postgraduate study.

Reputation (employability rankings): Keele Neuroscience ranks in the top 20 in England (Guardian University Guide 2022) and benefits from excellent student satisfaction and practical training in high-grade labs— Keele earned a solid standing on teaching quality and graduate outcomes.
