Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you’re thinking about a career in mental health nursing, the BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing at Buckinghamshire New University is designed to give you real, hands-on experience from day one. You won’t just be sitting in lectures — you’ll be practicing your skills in simulation labs that feel just like real hospital wards and community settings. These spaces let you try out everything from talking to patients and building trust, to using clinical equipment, all in a safe environment. It’s the perfect way to gain confidence before stepping into live clinical placements. On top of that, the programme links your classroom learning directly to practice, so you’re constantly applying what you’ve learned in real-world settings under the supervision of experienced mentors.

Here’s a closer look at what your hands-on experience will include:

  • Simulation labs that feel like real hospitals and community spaces – Practice procedures, patient interactions, and emergency responses in fully equipped rooms that mirror what you’ll encounter on placement.

  • Community-style simulated environments – Spaces like a living-room setup help you practise real-life situations, such as home visits and therapeutic conversations, so you’re ready for the variety of mental health settings.

  • Clinical placements with NHS partners – Around half your degree is spent gaining real-world experience in hospitals, clinics, and community settings, supervised by trained professionals. You’ll see what mental health nursing is really like and build confidence supporting patients.

  • Support from tutors and practice supervisors – You’ll get guidance, feedback, and mentoring throughout your placements, helping you reflect on experiences and grow as a nurse.

  • Digital tools and online learning – Platforms for discussion, interactive exercises, and reflective activities make it easy to stay engaged and build your digital skills alongside your clinical skills.

  • Real-world assessments – Your skills are tested through practical scenarios, reflective assignments, and presentations, all designed to prepare you for professional practice.

  • Preparation for professional registration – Every part of your practical experience aligns with Nursing & Midwifery Council standards, so you’re ready to become a registered mental health nurse after graduation.
