Graduates benefit from extensive placement experience, practical simulation learning, and strong links with healthcare providers — helping many students transition smoothly into employment after graduation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leeds Trinity, learning to be a mental health nurse goes far beyond lectures. You’ll spend about half of your time in real clinical settings, working alongside experienced nurses, and the other half in on-campus facilities designed to help you practise safely and confidently. The university’s clinical suites and simulated community spaces let you rehearse key skills — from therapeutic communication to patient assessments — before stepping into real-life care. You’ll also benefit from guidance and support from experienced supervisors, while learning from service users and carers whose experiences help you understand the human side of mental health care.

To give you a clearer picture, here’s what experiential learning looks like in practice:

  • Clinical and simulation facilities: Practice your skills in purpose-built clinical suites and realistic community settings before placements.

  • Digital health tools: Use the latest digital technologies that reflect what you’ll encounter in modern healthcare.

  • Structured placements: Each year includes significant placement blocks in hospitals, community teams, schools, primary care, and other NHS or third-sector settings.

  • Feedback and reflection: Track your growth through online portfolios and receive personal guidance from supervisors.

  • Teamwork and collaboration: Work alongside students from other health disciplines, preparing you for real multidisciplinary teamwork.

  • Learning from lived experience: Interact with service users and carers to gain insight into real experiences of mental health and recovery.

These experiences are designed to give you confidence, hands-on skills, and a real understanding of the day-to-day work of a mental health nurse.
