Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Mental Health) is designed for students who genuinely want to support, advocate for, and improve the lives of people experiencing mental health challenges. At LJMU, you’ll blend academic learning with hands-on clinical experience, gaining the confidence, empathy, and professional skills needed to thrive as a registered Mental Health Nurse across a variety of care settings.

Curriculum structure

Year 1 – Building strong foundations
Your first year focuses on understanding what it truly means to be a mental health nurse. Through modules such as Professional Practice in Nursing, Professional Values in Nursing, and Person-Centred Nursing Care, you’ll explore ethical practice, communication, and compassionate care. Alongside this, Promoting Health and Preventing Ill Health and Introduction to Practice Learning help you connect classroom learning with your first real clinical experiences.

Year 2 – Developing confidence in practice
In your second year, you’ll begin to work with more complex mental health needs and develop stronger clinical judgement. Modules including Assessment in Mental Health Nursing, Complexities in Mental Health Nursing Care, and Nursing Practice within Legal and Ethical Frameworks prepare you to assess, plan, and deliver safe care in real-world settings. You’ll also strengthen teamwork skills through Interprofessional Collaboration in Nursing and expand your placement experience in Developing Practice Learning.

Year 3 – Leadership, autonomy, and readiness for practice
Your final year brings everything together as you prepare to transition into professional practice. You’ll study Person-Centred Care Planning in Mental Health Nursing, Managing Risk in Mental Health Nursing, and Nursing Interventions and Prescriber Readiness, focusing on safe decision-making and advanced care. Modules such as Leadership and Quality Enhancement and Health Economics and Health Policy also help you understand leadership, service improvement, and how mental health care fits within the wider healthcare system.

Focus areas: mental health assessment, therapeutic communication, recovery-focused care, legal and ethical practice, leadership and teamwork, risk management.
