If you’re someone who’s passionate about mental health and making a real difference in people’s lives, Queen’s University Belfast offers a fantastic path forward. The BSc in Professional Nursing (Mental Health Nursing) gives you the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience you need to become a confident, compassionate mental health nurse — fully qualified and ready to work when you graduate.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year lays the groundwork for everything that follows. You’ll explore what it really means to be a nurse, learning about the role, responsibilities, and ethics of the profession. You’ll study modules like Introduction to Professional Nursing and Foundations of Mental Health Nursing, while also looking at how physical and mental health are connected through Health and Wellbeing Across the Lifespan. Alongside your classes, you'll start your first clinical placements — real experience, right from the start.
Year 2
In second year, you'll dive deeper into understanding mental health conditions and how to support people through them. You’ll learn how to assess, plan, and deliver effective care, with modules such as Mental Health and Recovery, Pharmacology for Mental Health Nursing, and Psychosocial Interventions in Mental Health. Your time in clinical placements becomes more intensive too — giving you the chance to build confidence and sharpen your skills in real mental health care settings.
Year 3
Your final year is all about preparing for professional practice. You’ll take on more responsibility and focus on leadership, clinical decision-making, and shaping care services. Modules like Advanced Mental Health Nursing Practice, Leadership and Management in Nursing, and Mental Health Policy and Services will help you bring together everything you’ve learned. You’ll also complete your final placement — a key step that gets you ready for life as a newly qualified nurse.

At Queen’s, learning to become a mental health nurse goes far beyond the classroom. From your very first year, you’ll split your time between academic study and real-world placements, gaining hands-on experience in hospitals, community settings, and specialist mental health services. On campus, you’ll practise your skills in cutting-edge simulation suites that feel like actual clinical environments — so when you’re out with patients, you’re already confident and prepared.
You'll learn how to communicate with patients in distress, respond in high-pressure situations, and apply everything you're taught in lectures to real clinical care. The idea is simple: by the time you graduate, you're not just qualified — you’re genuinely ready.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Clinical Skills & Simulation Suite: Practise everything from patient interviews to emergency responses in a realistic hospital-style environment, complete with one-way mirrors, debrief rooms, and medical equipment.
Extensive Clinical Placements: You'll spend roughly 50% of your time in placement — working in a wide range of mental health settings, from secure units and crisis teams to community outreach.
Digital Learning Tools: Use Canvas, Queen’s online learning platform, to access interactive resources, participate in discussion boards, and complete web-based workshops at your own pace.
Interprofessional Learning: Collaborate with students from other healthcare disciplines — just like in a real NHS team — to learn how to communicate, coordinate, and make shared decisions.
