3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Staffordshire University

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice (Adult) is designed for anyone who wants to make a real difference in adult healthcare. You’ll combine classroom learning with hands-on experience in hospitals and community settings, building the skills, confidence, and compassion needed to care for adults across a wide range of health conditions.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get a solid foundation in adult nursing. Modules like Adult Nursing Care and Adult Nursing in Practice 1–3 introduce essential clinical skills such as patient observation, infection control, medication administration, and basic life support. Mental Health and Physical Health Through the Lifespan and Professional, Legal and Ethical Considerations help you understand how ethics, law, and human factors shape safe, effective care. Early simulation labs and placements let you practise these skills in realistic settings before working directly with patients.

Year 2
Year two takes your skills to the next level. Through Adult Nursing in Practice 4–6, you’ll gain experience with more complex procedures like catheter care and peripheral cannulation. Modules such as Altered Mental Health and Physical Health Through the Lifespan, Human Factors: Risk, Decision-Making and Uncertainty, and Physical Assessment and Preparation for Prescribing build your clinical reasoning, helping you deliver safe, informed care in real-world settings.

Year 3
In your final year, you’ll consolidate your learning and focus on advanced practice. Adult Nursing in Practice 7–9 placements allow you to take on more responsibility, while Peer Learning and Teaching in Professional Nursing Practice and The Evidence-Base for Practice strengthen leadership and evidence-informed decision-making skills. You may also pursue elective experiences or complete a literature review, preparing you for lifelong learning and professional growth.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From the very beginning, the BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice (Adult) is all about learning by doing. You won’t just study theory — you’ll gain real hands-on experience in purpose-built labs and real-world clinical settings, so you graduate ready and confident to start your career. Staffordshire’s Clinical Simulation Suites and Skills Labs let you practise procedures like observation, medication administration, infection control, and even more advanced skills such as cannulation on realistic manikins. Alongside this, you’ll spend about half your time on placements across hospitals, community care, and patients’ homes, giving you a wide range of experiences that employers really value.

Here’s how practical learning works on this programme:

  • Clinical Simulation Suites and Skills Labs – Practice essential and advanced nursing procedures in realistic simulated hospital and community environments before stepping into placements.

  • Immersive learning spaces – Labs recreate wards, clinics, and home settings to help you apply skills in different care contexts.

  • NHS and community placements – Gain experience in hospitals, ICUs, and community settings with partner trusts across Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire, Derby, Wolverhampton, and Birmingham.

  • Elective placement options – In your final year, choose an elective to explore specialist areas or even international placements aligned with your career interests.

  • Collaborative learning and simulation feedback – Work in groups during simulation weeks, reflect on your performance, and strengthen teamwork and decision-making skills.

  • Campus support and study resources – Access the Centre for Health Innovation, libraries, and digital tools to support your learning, research, and reflective practice.
