Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Cumbria, you learn adult nursing by doing it. From the very start of the course, you’ll split your time between university study and real clinical placements, so you’re constantly linking theory to practice. Before you work with patients, you’ll build confidence in safe, supportive environments using the university’s specialist nursing facilities, designed to reflect real hospital and community settings:

  • Real clinical placements every year:
Around 50% of the course is spent on supervised placements, giving you hands-on experience in NHS hospitals and community healthcare settings across Cumbria and Lancashire. This means you graduate having already worked in real clinical teams, not just observed them.

  • Specialist simulation and skills suites:
You’ll practise essential nursing skills in simulated wards, home-care environments and high-fidelity simulation rooms, where realistic scenarios help you develop decision-making, communication and patient-care skills before entering placements.

  • Learning through realistic scenarios:
Simulation sessions allow you to safely practise procedures such as patient assessments, medicines management and responding to clinical emergencies — helping you feel prepared rather than overwhelmed when facing real situations.

  • Collaborative, hands-on learning:
You’ll regularly work in small groups during practical sessions and simulations, reflecting how nurses work in multidisciplinary teams and helping you develop confidence, teamwork and professional communication.

  • Strong academic and practice support:
Practice learning is carefully planned and supported by experienced academic staff and placement mentors, ensuring you feel guided throughout your placements and steadily build your clinical competence.

  • Access to learning resources:
Alongside practical training, you’ll have access to university libraries, digital learning resources and clinical learning tools that support your studies both on campus and while out on placement.
