One of the best parts about studying Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh is how much time you’ll spend actually doing the work, not just learning about it. From your very first year, you'll split your time between university-based learning and hands-on clinical placements. That means you’re out there in real hospitals and community settings, working with patients and healthcare teams — all while being fully supported.
You’ll also train in Edinburgh’s Clinical Skills Centre, where you can safely practice everything from basic procedures to complex care scenarios before stepping into real-world settings. Plus, because it’s Edinburgh, you’ll be learning alongside other future doctors, physios, and health professionals — just like in a real hospital.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
How you’ll learn by doing:
Placements every year
You’ll work directly with patients in a variety of settings — from busy hospital wards to GP surgeries and community health services. Placements are a key part of the degree every single year, and they’ll give you the chance to see what kind of nurse you want to become.
Fully equipped clinical skills lab
You'll train in the Clinical Skills Centre at the Chancellor’s Building, where you’ll practice real clinical procedures using lifelike mannequins, hospital equipment, and simulation tools — it’s like a dress rehearsal for the real thing.
Simulation technology
Edinburgh uses SMOTS (a simulation and video feedback system) so you can take part in realistic care scenarios, watch yourself back, and get guided feedback from experienced staff.
Learn as a team
You won’t be learning alone. Some of your training will be interprofessional — meaning you'll learn with and from students in medicine, physiotherapy, and more. It prepares you to work in a proper NHS team.
Optional international placement
In third year, you can apply for a clinical elective — a four-week placement in the UK or abroad — or even spend a semester at a partner university like La Trobe in Australia.
Ongoing support
You’ll be matched with practice supervisors and academic staff to guide you on placements. Inside the university, you also have access to academic advisors, wellbeing support, and expert teaching staff.
Modern study spaces and libraries
You’ll have access to all the University’s libraries, computing labs, and dedicated study areas — plus all your clinical skills teaching happens right next to the Royal Infirmary.
