3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Exeter

Program Overview

The Adult Nursing BSc at Exeter is designed for students who want to make a real difference in people’s lives. You’ll learn how to care for adults in hospitals, community settings, and social care, combining science, practical skills, and compassionate care to prepare you for a rewarding nursing career.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in both science and nursing practice. Modules like Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology give you the scientific knowledge you need, while Nursing Theory into Practice 1 and Simulated Practice Learning 1 help you start developing hands-on skills safely in a simulated environment. You’ll also get your first taste of clinical immersion, learning to interact with patients and apply basic nursing techniques.

Year 2
Year two expands your understanding of nursing in the wider world. You’ll explore Public, Population and Planetary Health to see how communities and environments affect wellbeing, while Evaluation, Improvement and Research Approaches in Nursing teaches you how to assess care and use evidence to improve outcomes. Continuing with Nursing Theory into Practice 2, Clinical Immersion 2, and Simulated Practice Learning 2, you’ll refine your practical skills and begin handling more complex patient care scenarios.

Year 3
In your final year, you bring everything together to prepare for professional practice. Nursing Theory into Practice 3 (Adult) focuses on advanced adult nursing care, while Developing Professional Identity: The Art and History of Nursing helps you understand your role as a healthcare professional. Innovation in Nursing Leadership and Management prepares you for leadership responsibilities, and Clinical Immersion 3 along with Simulated Practice Learning 3 ensures you graduate ready to work confidently in real clinical settings.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Exeter, you won’t be learning nursing only from lectures — you’ll be building real clinical confidence from day one. The programme blends hands-on simulation with extensive time in NHS settings, so by the time you qualify, you’ll already feel at home on the ward. You’ll practise key skills in a safe, supportive environment before applying them with real patients across the region. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Clinical Skills Resource Centre (CSRC): You’ll train in a modern, purpose-built clinical simulation facility at St Luke’s Campus, complete with realistic patient simulators, mock NHS wards, and spaces designed to mirror real hospital environments.

  • Simulated Practice Learning (Year 1–3): Each year includes dedicated simulated practice modules where you rehearse essential procedures — from clinical observations to communication and emergency response — before stepping into real placements.

  • Extensive NHS Placements: Around half of your degree takes place in real healthcare settings through long placements across Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and surrounding areas, giving you wide exposure to adult care in hospitals, community teams, and social-care settings.

  • Varied Placement Environments: Your experience may include acute medical wards, primary care, care homes, community nursing teams, and voluntary/independent-sector organisations, helping you understand adult care from every angle.

  • Supervised Learning on Placement: Throughout your placements, you’re supported by trained practice supervisors, and your progress is assessed using NMC professional standards — ensuring you grow steadily and safely in your clinical ability.
