3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Hertfordshire

Program Overview

If you’re looking to make a real difference in people’s lives, the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing at University of Hertfordshire is your opportunity to step into a meaningful and hands-on role in healthcare. It’s perfect for someone who cares deeply, wants a challenge, and is ready to grow into a confident practitioner caring for adults across different settings.

Curriculum Structure:
Year 1: You’ll dive into what it means to care for others — exploring health, wellbeing and society’s role in nursing. With modules like Promoting Health and Preventing Ill Health, Communication and Relationship Management Skills for Nursing, Foundations of Health and Wellbeing, and Adult Nursing: Professional Practice 1, you’ll begin developing your practical and communication skills through simulations and early placements.

Year 2: Here you’ll build on your foundations, getting into bioscience, medicines, and the holistic side of adult care. You’ll take modules such as Developing Health and Wellbeing, Integrated Adult Nursing Care, The Evidence Base for Adult Nursing Practice, and Advancing Adult Nursing Practice. You’ll be thinking more critically, planning care and applying what you’ve learned to more complex adult health needs.

Year 3: In your final year, you’ll become much more independent and ready for real-world nursing. With modules like Enhancing Health & Social Care through Inter-professional Education, Imagination and Innovation in Evidence Based Nursing Practice, Clinical Decision Making in Adult Nursing, Leading and Managing Adult Nursing Care, and Co-ordinating Adult Nursing Care, you’ll refine your skills, lead in teams, and prepare to register as a nurse.

Focus areas: “Adult nursing practice, bioscience, pharmacology, holistic assessment, leadership in healthcare, inter-professional collaboration.”
Learning outcomes: “Gain the knowledge, skills and values to provide compassionate, evidence-based care to adults in a range of settings; be fully ready to register as an adult nurse, manage complex care needs, and lead your own professional growth.”

Professional alignment (accreditation): This programme qualifies you to apply for registration as an adult nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Reputation (employability rankings): Graduates from University of Hertfordshire’s health and social care programmes have been very successful — around 98% were in employment or further study within 15 months. The university also ranks highly: one of the top spots in the UK for general nursing and the best in the East of England for nursing and midwifery.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From your first week, you won’t just sit back and absorb theory — you’ll be actively practising real nursing skills in the same kinds of settings you’ll one day work in. At the University of Hertfordshire you’ll use lifelike simulation wards and community spaces, and by doing placements in hospitals, surgeries and homes you’ll learn from real cases, real people and real teams. You’ll get to ask questions, make decisions, reflect on your practice and grow in confidence alongside staff who guide you every step of the way.

Here’s how this comes to life:

  • You’ll walk into a fully-furnished adult nursing ward and use a VR headset or simulated scenario, so you feel what it’s like to move from classroom to real patient care.

  • You’ll practise safe patient handling using real hoists, slings and movement aids in dedicated labs — so when you’re in a community or hospital setting, you’ll feel ready, not anxious.

  • You’ll step into a mock-home environment (complete with a divan bed and coffee table) to practise how you might assess and support people in their own living spaces, so you get the community side of nursing too.

  • You’ll go on placements in real hospitals, GP practices, care homes and community centres — caring for adults, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, and experiencing the full variety of nursing in real life.

  • Throughout your placements you’ll be supported by university lecturers and practice educators who help you reflect, grow and move closer to your goal of being a competent, confident adult nurse.

Progression & Future Opportunities

With a BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing from Hertfordshire, you’ll be stepping into a career where you’re truly needed — and valued. Most graduates move straight into NHS roles such as Adult Staff Nurse, Community Nurse, Specialist Nurse or even begin working towards Ward Manager positions as they gain experience. You’ll finish ready for NMC registration — which means you’re fully qualified to start making a difference from day one.

Here’s what supports a great future for Hertfordshire nursing graduates:

  • You’ll get dedicated career support — from CV help to employer networking — for at least two years after you graduate, so you never feel like you’re stepping into the workplace alone.

  • Around 96% of graduates from this course are in work or further study within 15 months — a strong indicator that employers trust this degree.

  • The average salary 15 months after graduating is about £28,000, showing you’ll enter a stable and rewarding field right away.

  • Strong NHS partnerships mean students often turn their placements into job offers — you’ll already know the teams, the environment and the pace of real nursing.

  • Because the course leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, your qualification holds long-term professional value — in the UK and beyond.

Further Academic Progression:
If you fall in love with a particular area of nursing (and most students do!), you can keep going — with options such as MSc Adult Nursing, leadership pathways or specialist postgraduate training like critical care, community health or advanced clinical practice.
