Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leeds, your nursing education goes far beyond the classroom. From your very first year, you’ll combine academic study with hands-on learning in real healthcare environments. Around half of your time will be spent on clinical placements, where you’ll work alongside experienced nurses and healthcare teams, caring for adults in hospitals and community settings. On campus, you’ll practise your skills in some of the most advanced simulation facilities in the UK — giving you the confidence to care for real patients safely and professionally.

Here’s what that experience looks like in action:

  • Clinical placements every year at leading healthcare partners such as The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, St James’s University Hospital, and Leeds General Infirmary, along with community and critical care placements.
  • A structured Adult Placement Circuit, where you’ll rotate through medical, surgical, community, and older adult settings — finishing with a final “sign-off” placement to prepare for qualification.
  • Access to state-of-the-art skills and simulation suites, designed to look and feel like real hospital wards, an intensive care unit, and even a fully equipped apartment for community-care scenarios.
  • Training with high-fidelity manikins and simulated patients, so you can safely practise procedures like monitoring vital signs, managing wounds, and giving medication before working with real patients.
  • Regular team-based simulations and group projects, helping you build communication, leadership and teamwork skills that are essential in nursing practice.
  • Optional international placements in your final year, giving you the chance to explore global healthcare systems and expand your cultural understanding.
  • Access to the university’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for online resources, recorded lectures, and interactive learning tools.
  • Full use of Leeds’ specialist libraries and study spaces, including the Laidlaw, Edward Boyle, and Brotherton Libraries, plus a dedicated healthcare library at St James’s University Hospital.
