You’ll gain the knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience to work across hospitals, community settings, and mental health services, making a real difference in people’s lives.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: You’ll start with modules like Foundations of Adult and Mental Health Nursing, Fundamentals of Life Sciences, and Promoting Health and Preventing Ill-Health, giving you a strong base in anatomy, physiology, public health, and core nursing principles. Early practice placements introduce you to real healthcare environments and help you develop communication, teamwork, and basic care planning skills.

Year 3: The focus shifts to more acute and complex care. Modules like Nursing Care of the Acutely Ill Person (Adult) and integrated adult-mental health training prepare you for challenging clinical situations, while your placements give you real-world experience across diverse healthcare settings.

Year 4 (Integrated Master’s): In your final year, modules like Delivering Complex and Integrated Care for Adult and Mental Health Nursing and an independent research/project module develop your advanced clinical, leadership, and research skills — readying you for specialist practice, leadership, or further academic study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Roehampton, learning to become an adult and mental health nurse is hands-on from the start. You’ll practice essential skills in realistic simulation labs and then take your learning into real hospitals, community clinics, mental health services, hospices, and other care settings. This approach helps you build confidence, competence, and a clear understanding of what it means to provide excellent care in the real world.

Here’s what your practical experience looks like:

  • Clinical Simulation Centre: Train in mock wards, GP rooms, community setups, and home-care scenarios using hi-tech patient simulators and role-play with service users.

  • Real-world placements: Gain experience across hospitals, mental health services, community care, hospices, and rehabilitation centres.

  • Team-based learning: Work alongside students from other healthcare courses to understand multidisciplinary and integrated care.

  • Blended learning: Combine lectures, seminars, group projects, online modules, and reflective exercises to connect theory with practice.

  • Flexible placement opportunities: Experience a variety of healthcare settings through Roehampton’s placement network, giving you broad exposure to different adult and mental health care environments.
