3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) at the University of Southampton is designed for students who want to make a meaningful impact in adult healthcare, combining strong scientific teaching with real hands-on nursing experience. You’ll learn how to care for adults in hospital and community settings while building the confidence and clinical skills needed to become a fully qualified professional nurse.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
Your first year gives you the foundations you’ll rely on throughout your career. You’ll study modules like Introduction to Professional Practice (BSc), Applied Health Science for Nursing Practice, Foundations of Health Sciences for Nursing Practice, Global and Public Health, and Person-Centred Nursing Care. Alongside your classroom learning, you’ll have early practice placements that let you apply what you’re learning and get a feel for real nursing environments.

Year 2
In your second year, the focus shifts toward building your adult nursing expertise. You’ll develop stronger clinical decision-making skills through modules such as Clinical Assessment and Planning Care for Adults, learning how to assess health needs, plan care and support adults with a range of conditions. Your placements also expand, giving you more time in hospitals and community teams so you can grow your confidence.

Year 3
Your final year brings everything together. You’ll refine your clinical skills, strengthen your judgement and deepen your understanding of caring for adults in complex healthcare settings. By the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to step confidently into your first role — and you’ll be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Adult Nurse.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Southampton, studying Adult Nursing isn’t just about lectures — it’s about learning by doing. From the very first year, you’ll practice your skills in realistic simulation wards before moving on to real hospitals and community placements. This hands-on approach means you gain confidence, competence, and a real sense of what it’s like to care for patients safely and effectively.

Here’s how you’ll experience it:

  • Simulated hospital wards and skills rooms: Train in purpose-built wards with working hospital beds, nurse-call systems, medical gases, and high-tech adult manikins that mimic real patients. These spaces let you practise everything from routine care to emergency procedures in a safe, realistic environment.

  • Hospital and community placements: You’ll spend a significant portion of your course in real NHS settings across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, including surgical, medical, and community care. This is where theory meets practice, giving you firsthand experience of adult nursing.

  • Supportive supervision: On placement, experienced registered nurses guide you step by step, offering feedback and ensuring you gain real-world experience safely.

  • Team-based learning: You’ll work alongside other healthcare students in both simulation and placement settings, mirroring the collaborative environment of modern healthcare teams.

  • Structured practice hours: With around 2,300 hours of practice learning, you’ll get plenty of time to refine your skills under guidance before stepping fully into your professional role.
